How do I know what size oil cooler to go for? Is this calculated scientifically or just whatever fits?
Specs: 2005 R1 in an MNR VortX, used for track driving in sunny Hungary (can be as hot as Greece in the summer...)
Would a 235mm wide and 16 row (124mm high) Mocal filter be enough? Does anyone know? Or should I go for the largest possible that fits???

I have a ZZR so it's an older engine, but about the same size as an R1.

I used to use the original Kawasaki oil cooler, which was 250mm wide x 110mm high x 30mm deep (27,500mm2).

I figured that on the bike, it was mounted high up behind the front wheel and directly in front of the exhaust down pipes and that Mr Kawasaki had decided that it was the right size.

However my cooler was old (some of the fins were damaged and blocked) and badly located (down to a combination of things). I was regularly seeing oil temps of 120C on the track or motorway.

I recently fitted a new Mocal cooler from Think Automotive. It's a 10 row, 250mm wide x 90mm high one, so the area is slightly smaller (22,500m2). However it's now located right behind the nose cone, down low below the water radiator. Then I drilled 5 holes in the nosecone to feed cold air straight onto it.

On a recent run up to Scotland and back the oil temp stayed at 80-90C most of the time, only peaking at 100C once during a slow but steep climb.

If I was you, I would buy the biggest cooler you can fit in fresh cold air.

What's 'sun'?

I went for 13-row Mocal @ 235mm width based on what I heard being used on a busa OK in UK. The sandwich plate is marked on think auto invoice as a SP100 M20x1.5. Fitted easier with 90 degree bends on all the four pipe connectors.

If you go too large then you can run too cool, think auto advise fitting a thermostat as well in that case that bypasses the oil cooler at <80C.
