Just spent the morning underneath the ZZR1100 engine. Since I fitted this engine, it's had an oil leak. Finally tracked it down to a leaking balancer shaft seal.

Replaced that, and then struggled to get it started again. Now it has started it sounds like I'm killing a cat in there. Quite high pitched squeal from the front of the engine, that changes with the revs.

Now this could be a sign of something serious, or it could be that this is the sound of the balancer shaft seal bedding in (or failing again and that there is another underlying problem).

I've taken the seal out again, re-greased it, and carefully reassembled it all. It still squeals like a stuck pig.

If I had a fan belt, I'd tighten it, but there are no belts in my engine. It's all chains!

Engine has just done a hard 800 miles round Scotland, but when I put it away on Sunday night it was all OK.

is there a chance you didnt quite remove all of the previous seal and theres a bit left in a funny position making a noise?

The old seal was sort of leaning against the retaining arm and just fell out into my hand when I removed it. No levering required. It came out complete though, and is an identical match to the new one that went in. All the numbers matched etc

I took the thrust washer out, cleaned the inner surfaces, cleaned the thrust washer, greased everything and stuck it back together with a new seal. Even used a "suitable drift" to make sure it went in square and seated properly.

hi its a while since i did one of these so here goes
did you remove the balancer shaft at all if so this is the problem it runs on a eccentric cam and needs to be adjusted to stop the noise there should be a slot in the shaft that you turn till the noise goes away

Very unsure of the cause, obvious suggestion would be oil starvation, but circumstances and data suggest otherwise. Act of God, and not a very cheap one. The rod you see is a Carrillo.

Woooooo hoooooo!!

Fixed the bloody squeek. Was a right pain in the arse, but it was exactly as Malc suggested. Turn the ecentric cam and the noise stops.

Trouble was the cam was stuck solid. Had to warm the engine up (complete with squeel) then drain the hot oil out, strip the oil cooler pipework off, take the locking lever off the cam, persuade the cam to move (small then larger mole grips). Then put it all back together while it was still hot. Start the engine and then turn the (no relieved) balancer shaft until it stopped squeeking.

Sorted and sooooo happy.

Looks like the trip to the BTCC at Croft on Sunday will be in the BEC!
