i've previously had a few false neutrals and strange gear changes. i was at rockingham on saturday and after a few laps started to have problems
going down into 4th. it wouldn't go in properly and a couple of times it stalled the engine. i then had to dip the clutch, press the starter and
select 3rd gear. with the clutch up it rattled but wouldn't turn the engine over.
i managed to drive around the problem for an hour by being really carefull with the gear change and letting the revs drop lower before changing.
then on a downshift it didn't go into gear, there was a bang and a clatter then i managed to find a gear. it was ok under power but as soon as i
lifted something was rattling away like mad and the front of the car was shaking. pushing the car back and forward in neutral you can here something
rattling.
i've found quite a lot of little bits of metal in the sump and taken a couple of pics.
the part arrowed seems very loose? when i turn the prop it also moves backward and forwards a lot.
i'll get the engine out tomorrow night, is it fairly easy to get the gears out?
Sounds like youve killed some gears and/or bent the selector forks- this cases more than one gear to be selected at nce-hence th banging.
Youtr arrow is pointing at an unselected gear, this will slop around easy enough
Yes once the engines out it's pretty easy to get the gearbox out.
Just re-read and wondered which "backwards and forwards " you meant

Andy at AB Performance is your man for the job... can do these in his sleep.. almost !!
got it all in bits. lots of wear visible and a few corners knocked of gears.
the gear i arrowed above and the one next to it where very loose. the circlips either side of them are bent out of shape and no longer locate in the
grooves allowing the gears to have a lot of movement.
the selector forks look ok.
not sure if i should just get another complete engine or get a secondhand gear set

partly thinking i should just chuck another engine in, but then that could end up with similar problems(or different ones).
could also be a problem trying to find a good set of gears
Give TTS a bell, they may be able to help with a CR HD gear kit.
Nearly a 15 year old gearbox carrying 3 times the design weight...
They seem to be getting like rocking horse poo.
does your prop have a cush or shock absorber built in?
