Hi, my brother with whom we have built our 2005 R1 engined MNR has gone for a drive yesterday and at one of his gearchanges (not when he was thrashing it either), he pressed the clutch pedal, and when let it back up, the engine just revved freely... He could not re-engage the clutch again, so we trailered the car home.
We didn't have the time to look at it yet, but it is surely not the pedals or the clutch cable. We have checked that. It seems to us - also looking at the service manual - that the clutch pedal probably pulled more cable than it is physically possible on an R1 bike, and the shaft that is in the clutch assembly has moved too far out and is now stuck.
We have not looked it yet as I say, just guessing...
Has anyone had any similar experience? What have you done?
Does it seem like a good idea to make a pedal stop to ensure that the pedal doesn't pull too much cable?
How much freeplay do you leave on the clutch?
What is the final consensus? Should I change to Barnett clutch (springs, etc) or stick to the OEM clutch?

The '03 and earlier R1 used a diapram clutch which could flip inside out and bind as described.

As far as I am aware later engines are normal springs. These can get coil bound but that only normally occurs with aftermarket springs. I would also inspect the basket for notches.

Cheers guys, what happened is that the pressure plate moved so far out in fact that it rotated a tiny bit when out, and couldn't ge back onto the notches of the basket. We just had to slacken the springs, turn a little bit on the pressure plate and it clicked in place no problems. It all works now. Thanks for the info everyone. We are now installing a pedal stop to avoid this happening again.
