R1 universal clutch holder tool
Frosty - 29/9/09 at 11:06 AM

I'm helping a friend fit a new clutch to his R1 engine at some point this week.

I'm interested to hear the "Locost" workaround to the universal clutch holder tool when torquing up the clutch boss nut.

Apart from actually buying the tool, what works best?

It's hard to work out the best way around it from the workshop manual image, I'm certain it's not "buy the tool" though LOL

i just bent some stainless flat bar than welded them together to match the slots on the basket

Last time I did it I got a piece of tube and welded to small flat plates to it so that the plates fit in the slots on the clutch basket.

I seem to remember taking apart my scrap engine by putting a socket on the other end and winding it so the handle pressed on the floor, then standing on the engine so it didn't lift up, tuned the socket on the clutch end with a large tube over the handle to give leverage. Probably something you don't want to do on an engine you planned to use again.

If its to stop the inner and out bits rotating when doing up get an old friction plate and steel (or 2x friction and 1x steel) and bolt them together.

Put it in gear then it should all be locked up?
