If i buy a Honda CBR1100XX engine, do i need to dry sump it?

If so whats the best engine to buy that i dont have to dry sump.
My question is really related to the cost as ive heard it aint cheap to do.

Also can anyone tell me if a 1996 carb model will be any good for a BEC?

Blackbirds to have a tendancy to go pop if not dry sumped, they are probably the least reliable of the popular engines and always fail in the same way. Some people get away with a baffled wet sump for road only use but if its going anywhere near a track you're asking for problems with that engine unless its dry sumped.
Top pick of the cheaper engines would be the R1 Id say, just as pokey as the blackbird but a fair but lighter and doesnt need a dry sump.
Only problem with the R1 engine, like any engine newer than 1995, is that you need a catalytic converter for SVA, but these can be hired for the week rather than buy one.

Cheers Chris, good advice, think ill steer clear, although i wont be going trackdaying much, i can imagine once built i may have the urge to try a track day or 2.

Those R1 motors dont come cheap tho, have you seen the one darren from GTS is selling £1300. phew!

I saw n post the other day someone saying between 750 & 1000 for R1's.

Oh well keep my eyes open.

Look at sidenet.co.uk for R1 engines. This is a forum for sidecar racerss. Noticed an injected R1 going for £1175, usually you will find carb'd ones around the £1000 mark (with looms and electrics). Just be patient. Even cheaper if you want to import them from a European seller.

Ignore Darrens R1 - its too expensive, he's asking top dollar for it.

Chris, if you're basing the "expensive" assumption on the £1300 engine, then I agree with Paul, its top dollar for an engine like that. Usually you'd pay around £800-1000 for a decent carbed R1 engine and ancilliaries, a decent Blackbird engine and ancilliaries will cost you just as much.

You need adry sump on a blackbird. I didnt have one fitted(just had short baffled sump. On the way to the sva (retest cos i failed emmissions first time) it knocked out the big end shell on no. 3. I think due to oil surge. Ive rebuilt it all to great expence and even more for a dry sump kit.
