Took the R1 out yesterday and on the way home did some traffic light messing with a Ford Mustang GT500, lets just say, he couldnt get near me till
just after a ton.
But there was a distinct clutch smell after.
Im going to get a Barnett clutch kit but how do i check to see if i need a new clutch too?
Do you have the haynes manual for the R1?
It will tell you tolerances for the clutch plates...

for a 2003 r1 the clutch service limit is 2.8mm
the friction plate thickness should be 2.9mm-3.1 for the '98 model.
Stick with OEM plates, Barnett are crap. Springs are good though.
Cant see how how you would get a clutch smell from a wet clutch! if you do change it though another vote for OEM plates.
Would think its more than likely the brakes you could smell or the Mustangs clutch
Just checked car over in the garage.
Must have been the Mustang clutch and the other smell must be the diff oil thats kindly collected over my rear diffuser
After every outing i need to mop a puddle up off the diffuser

Sierra diff?
Make the diff breather pipe longer unless the oil is coming out of the bearings or the back cover, if that is the case replace.
