I just placed an order for the Billet sumpe from the Kit car Workshop SUMP. I have just
recieved an email back saying the price has gone up to £190. Also need to buy
Fireblade Baffle Plate 17.63
Fireblade Shortened oil pickup (exchange) & P R V stand off tube 14.00
Carriage 12.00
Are they worth it? I want to do more track days this year. I will be able to cancel the order as the price has increased.
Does Chris Gamlins uncle do fireblade stuff?
Cheers
Jim
Hi jim
Id send Chris an Email although he will mosy likely see it on here. If he cant help try Stuart Taylor Racing. They do a billet sump, a friend got one
last year for about 150.
HTH Gordon
The one from Stuart Taylor and Kit car look very similar. I would think they have gone up to 190 aswell.
Also on the Website it never mentioned needing all the other bits. Is this a misleading info?
Cheers
Jim
Hi Jim
I think the ST and Kit Car Workshop ones are one and the same thing, I think one supplies the other (ST supplies KCW I think but Im not sure).
You don't need a chopped / billet sump to do trackdays tho, a baffle plate will be fine. The only reason to go for a chopped sump on a blade is
to increase ground clearance, which can be done to a small degree by moving the drain plug which is easy to do.
My uncle has done one chopped blade sump (mine) but its a lot more complicated to chop than a ZX9. I could take some pictures at the weekend if you
like but Id need to ask him if he'd consider doing another one or not, and if so how much.
Drop me an email over the weekend and I'll get back to you.
cheers
Chris
Cheers Chris,
I might only buy a baffle plate then.
I was only after the Baffled sump for the moving of the Sump Plug. Would your uncle be able to just move the Sump plug to the side?
Cheers again for the info
Jim
Yup, sump plug can be welded up and repositioned on the side for £25 plus £7.50 postage (unless you are local to West Sussex), plus another tenner if
you want an oil temperature boss put in at the same time. I dont have any pictures but Ryan (Catflap) has just had his done so might be able to supply
some.
cheers
Chris
How does the oil temp boss work? Would a standard oil temp gauge kit work on it?
Cheers again
Jim
I can also get your sump modified (side mounted plug and temp boss) for £25. I'm based near Doncaster if that's easier. See my photo
archive.
Cheers
Ben
Jim, basically any car oil temperature (not pressure) gauge will work from the sump, John would just need to know the thread of the sender you
are going to use so he can tap it. Alternatively if you dont know the guage/thread you're going to use, he can just weld in a blank boss without
hole which you can drill/tap yourself as and when you get a gauge.
Ben, it's £25 for the sump mod on its own or £35 for a temp sender boss as well, but yeh drop me an
E-Mail if you're interested and I'll forward you John's address so you can post it
to him. He'away over easter but can usually turn them round in a couple of weeks.
cheers
Chris
And here's an example of his most excellent work, this is a full chop on a ZX9
Rescued attachment zx9r_sump_chop_21.jpg
Cheers Jasper
I took a couple of pictures and measurements of my choped sump compared to a standard one
Chopped Blade Sump
This is my modded sump
Chopped/normal blade sump side
I did some measurements and most of the gain is in the sump plug moving rather than the chop like I had done. My whole sump is 45mm deep (Same as ST
Billet sump). A regular blade sump with drain plug is 74mm, but a regular blade sump with a modded drain plug would be about 57mm, so you only gain
around 12mm by chopping the sump / fitting a billet sump.
cheers
Chris

As Chris mentioned, I have just had my sump back from him, it’s a top job, the welding looks superb. Its given me a nice flat belly now, im
considering putting a sheet of carbon on the bottom of the engine bay to reduce drag, although I suspect the difference will be minimal.
I have also seen, and helped fit the billet sump, now that thing is a work of art, its almost too nice to waste on the bottom of an engine. But…would
I pay that much for a sump? Nope, as you can see I had mine modified, I do run a baffle plate though, its cheep (and was on the car when I bought it
to be honest)
I also had a plat welded in, and drilled and tapped, so I can run a temp sender from there, this was my real reason fro getting the mod.
I don’t have any pics I`m afraid, I need to buy a camera soon for this sort of thing.
Drop me a line if I can help with anything
Flap
Cheers for all the replies.
As soon as I get confirmation that they are cancelling my order and placed the order for the baffle plate I will be asking Chris for his Uncle's
address. If it looks as good as it sounds I may be getting another two done.
Out of interest when the sump plug has been removed the prongs at the bottom will be the lowest point. Can they be just cut off?
Cheers

Loafersmate (Ben), apologies for the confused reply up there, I misread your message as "Can I also" rather than "I can also". I
only just realised when I re-read the thread
Chris
Guys.. I need to lower my sump on the ZX9R E model in my ST. I use the car for racing so its sits low.. problem is I want it lower and it is making
getting onto the trailer a nightmare.
Can you point me in any directions who can do this other than spending 200-250 on a billet sump kit from ST.
The oil pickup and drain pipe I presume need changed. Any advise welcome here.
Hi Timbo
My uncle still does the sump chops as mentioned originally.
As you correctly assume, the sump and the pickup need modifying together. My uncle can do the same as you see in Jasper's pic above for £50 +
£7.50 for return postage, plus £10 if you also want an oil temperature boss. Trunaround is usually a couple of weeks in total, drop me a u2u if you
want more details.
This is another pic of Jasper's showing the modified pickup too, on the left you can see the old base of the sump that is chopped of
Chopped XR9R sump 1
cheers
