Reversing rotation of a starter motor

Well as the subject says really. Anyone tried it ?
Is it a case of swapping over the connections to the field & armature windings or does the pre-engagement mechanism designed to only work when spinning in the correct direction.
Particularly interested in doing it with a Ford Zetec motor.

And yes I know you can get a VW one that spins backwards but I don't think the pinion teeth have the same mesh as the Ford ones so no good for what I need.

You only need to reverse the field windings. If you reverse both field and armature then the motor will continue to run in the same direction. If the polarity of the pre-engage solenoid is not changed then it should work, just so long as there is no bendix

The field windings are usually aluminum on modern starter motors ----- not the easiest material to solder.
