
Hi Everyone. I know this will probably have been covered but i've been reading for about an hour so far and still not sure..
I've got to the point of my build where i need to buy my engine.
The plan was to go for an R1 but then i heard about the ZX12R engine which i thought would be better, as in faster and more torque.
Then i found out you need a dry sump which puts the engine way over budget.
But i've just read that someone had a ZX12R with a baffled wet sump (source: http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=35278&page=2)
I'm planning on road use only really but i can't afford to spend more than 2k on my engine.
Should i just stick with the R1 plan?
What if i change engines once the car is registered on the road is it a long procudure to register the new engine? Thinking buy the cheaper R1 now and
upgrade later?

The ZX12R does not need a dry sump! Installation costs are now quite similar for the two engines that you quote, and if you're careful the ZX12R
can be the bargain motor.
Don't forget to budget for a Powercommander, Exhaust, Air Filter etc etc. Check out Hellfire's build site for details.
sorry cant help with engine choice as ive never had any BEC
but im pretty sure you just need to tell tyhe DVLA the new engine capacity and number in the V5 if you change engine

I had an R1.
I would buy a ZX12 now though, as Tim said there are a few bargains around.
Or you could save your pennies and buy a ZX14

ZX12R is a great choice of engine IMHO.

I also have an Indy ZX12 with a baffled sump as recommended by a number of people who've successfully run one without dry sump.

I had mine done my Martin Keenan but basically he just chopped about 2-3 inch off the bottom and then boxed it out so it retained roughly the same
volume overall, the sump plug is also moved to the side. The baffle is actually what was the old side wall with a couple of V's cut in the
bottom.
The pickup also need modifying but they're only plastic so you can just cut it to size with a hacksaw and then again put a V or two in the
bottom.
Some have a horizontal baffle also. No pics I'm afraid but there is one of someone else's here...
