I've bought one of these and it arrived today. Have opened and read the instructions about its use. It states:
"The car should not be at a complete stand still - engage first gear with the clutch depressed, and then select reverse"
Surely thats not correct? Why would you want to be moving forward even a little to then select reverse?
Secondly, I hand rotated the propshaft flange (in both directions) to see how it rotates and then lifted the reverse lever to engage it. Not only does
the propshaft continue to be able to rotate in both directions (though with a tiny little type of resistance) but also the lever popped back down of
it's own accord. When selecting reverse will I need to hold the lever up or am I just not understanding how this contraption works?
Someone please help...
I guess it has dog clutch engagements. If you are stopped, they won't go in if they are not exactly in line.
Are you lifting the lever fully as you rotate the flanges?
You are not lifting the lever up far enough.
It's always easier for things to mesh if there is a slight movement to close cut gears...
you really have to 'bang' the lever up and down to engage it. Its not the smoothest bit of kit.
i've pulled it up as far as i can but then the flanges lock... =o/
There is a two - page article on BEC reverse (and uprated type 9) gearboxes in this month's CKC magazine, however - it doesn't answer your question!
You have to rotate the flange slowly as you lift the lever, there is a stop ring around the plunger, that must come to a stop against the top face of
the box, then it will be in reverse.
You can try pressing down on the other end of the lever at the same time as lifting, that should do it.
It will free up and be easier to use when in normal use.

franky - you're right. it isn't smooth at all. right PITA to pull up. hopefully as maximill666 said, i hope it gets easier with use.
You don't want it to easy to engage.
I hate to imagine what would happen if someone accidently selected reverse!!

but how would someone engage it accidently? I mean its not like a cec where you could choose the wrong slot in the gearbox. For a bec you would have
to physically lift the lever to engage it which is seperate to either a sequential gear knob or paddleshift.

it could be 70% lighter/easier in operation and there still would be no chance of knocking it in/out of gear etc.
once fitted in the car it will be a LOT easier to operate.

sorry to sorta hijack your thread but has anyone found out if this box fits the megabusa westy yet? the quaife one fits straight in apparently.. so
will the mnr one fit? have asked a few times in different places with no answer yet.. i asked mnr once they didnt reply to that part of the question..
lol.. cant be far away from the same mounting points

the mnr box is a direct replcement for the quaiffe. for some reason the mountings & input/output flanges are in exactly the same positions
