Looking to make an oil / air seperator to use on the crankcase breather on my R1, oil will return to sump, air will breath to a seperate catch tank.

I know others have done this and I know oil / air seperator tanks are available off the shelf but i'd prefer to make one to hopefully save a bit of dosh and make it the size / shape I want for the location I want to fit it.

I haven't seen inside one of the shelf but the ones I've seen have the pipe coming in horizontal on one of the sides and the oil draining out of the bottom. Presumably there is a plate with holes in or some wire mesh just inside for the vapour to blow through and seperate the oil out?

Anyone any advice on whats best / required pics would be good.

Would it work the same with the pipe in coming in the top with a plate with holes in say a 1/4 of the way down the tank and the drain at the bottom?

Any advice on size?

still not really sure why it needs seperating though, as the crank case is full of air anyway. thought a catch tank with a return pipe (to the sump) in the bottom would do the job?

Yeah I've seen that, interesting but probably doesn't have the capacity i need. It probably doesn't need separating, when it starts pumping oil out there is very little air in it
A catch tank would probably do but if I'm doing it I may as well do it right.

Um, why is it pumping oil out in the first place?? It sounds like there's an underlying problem that would be better off cured first.
