Sprint gearing
zilspeed - 12/4/10 at 10:01 PM

Yep, I think that's what I'm going to have.

Being a bit of a, how shall I put it, a tit, I hadn't paid any attention to the diff ratio in Ye Olde Rustye Sylva.

Seeing as the axle's now out, it kinda made sense to check it out.

4.12 : 1

Woohoo.....

According to the gear calc spreadsheet, I'll have a top speed of 100.13 mph @11,000rpm with my 185/60 x 13s.

That's a bit err 'short' is it not ?

blakep82 - 12/4/10 at 10:22 PM

erm, yeah, not ideal...

UncleFista - 13/4/10 at 12:48 AM

Hmmm, buy some bigger wheels/tyres ?

lsdweb - 13/4/10 at 07:35 AM

Just go and do hillclimbs instead!

minitici - 13/4/10 at 08:14 AM

Seems reasonable for a target speed of 95 mph over the finish line at Kames sprint - but that will be an awful lot of gear shifting in 200 yards!
The ZX10 Hawke was only on the rev limiter in 4th at 92mph........

Well, as the hills and sprints will be my chosen thing, it isn't a big deal in terms of top speed, but as the man says, and if I may lapse into the Scots for a wee moment, it'll mean a wheen o' gearchanges.

As I said to someone else last night, it'll be all revs and fury, but at speeds more compatible with my meagre talents.

Until the Viva diff breaks, at which point we're Donald Ducked.

Then we're into some engineering...

Ingliston will need closer to 120 mph?

I'll just put a ringer in for that.
I have a mate and a friend of his who between them have more laps of Ingliston than the rest of us put together.

P.S. Thread resurrection tastic.

Well the solution is obvious.

Reprogramme the rev limiter!

What engine/box are you running?

ZX10 - not the current one.
Old model 997cc, like a ZZR1100 only 55cc smaller.

It should be very accelerative!!

motorcycle_mayhem - 3/6/10 at 12:33 PM

Time for a CWP change then!

I'm stuck at 3.2 (Freeloader) and that just isn't enough for Combe, Goodwood and several others. There's a 3.14 Sierra option for me, but that's a lot of pain for not a lot of gain.
Current slicks (9.2 by 22), are about as big as I can go, yes, there are 23" ones, but they're Carlos Van Dango width...

So, yep, same problem. Unless I can stumble across a good way out of this, the Westfield gets dumped for a R1oT.

zilspeed - 12/6/10 at 03:47 PM

Not sure there are any alternatives for my current axle.

The stupid side of me thinks that ripping it out, sticking in a transaxle and an IRS setup would be a good idea.
Also gives a mechanical reverse gear too.

(Which I still think is a must. To suggest otherwise is second best really.)

Ivan - 12/6/10 at 04:27 PM

The simplest solution is bigger wheels and/or bigger profile tyres if it suits your configuration.

Or of course new innards for the diff at a more suitable ratio - then at least the installation stays the same.
