4xv R1 any good
sdh2903 - 9/6/10 at 07:03 PM

Ive found an R1 package at a very good price, its a 99 4xv on carbs and its done low miles

Is this the model of R1 that suffers with gearbox issues? Is it suitable for kitcar installation?

cheers
Steve

engine will fit & work fine, but 2000-2001 5JJ does have a better gearbox

third gear on my 03 one feels like running a stick through margarine...
good engines though, and the gears are only 80quid to replace.apart from first (140iirc)

I liked them so much I had two! And rebuilt the bottom end of the second one. Lovely noise. Good speed. Better gearing for a car than 04 and later engines. Tricky emissions for IVA. Neither of mine were that reliable. A bit like what Clarkeson says about Alfas. You've got to live though the pain for those glorious moments when it all works.

I would highly recommend the 4xv, my engines been in the car about 5 years now the last 3 turbocharged if it can handle 257hp turboed you should be able to thrash it all day long without blowing it up!

Steve, no panic I nearly bought that for the store cupboard, very very good price considering. If you have made your mind up on going BEC, give me a shout I have 2 R1's at the mo one with the same engine you are looking. Easy Peazy install if you go for it.
send me a u2u if you fancy letting me know how much the deal is
cheers D
