As I've been tidying bits up on my Fury I noticed that there was a bobbin mount on the side of the head doing nothing...
So I took it off. Mistake.
I've been fitting a flatshift system and now it's finished I wanted to just nip round the block and test it. Nipped round the block,
literally. Flatshifter working great, engine sounded sweet..drove straight back on the drive.
Lifted the bonnet and theres oil splattered on the side of the engine. It seems the bolt holes go all the way through the casing where the chain runs.
I know it's my fault for taking it off but I can't understand why it would be designed this way, seems stupid.
So I was horrified at first, but the oil is thin and looks more than it actually is. The oil pressure didn't go down and the water and oil temp
didn't rise. It still sounds fine. Just a bit worrying. The level is still reading full on the sump too.
So looks to be okay, although when I got back I did notice that it seems to be ticking over faster than normal... not sure whether it's got
anything to do with what's just happened or if it's something else..maybe sucking air somewhere. It did it yesterday too but only briefly
then dropped again. I let it cool back down again and restarted it and the tickover is back to normal, tried it with and without the quickshifter coil
wiring and made no difference. I don't see why what just happened would make it tick over a bit high, Wondered if the flatshifter is making it
run rich because it's killing the coils? Dunno.
Anyway that plate is back on now and it seems back to normal, let that be a warning to any R1 owners!
My renault engine is the same, with bolts going all the way through to the waterways.
Stupid isn't it, theres plenty of meat in the casting anyway theres no need for it. I actually thought about it when taking it off, then dismissed the thought. Should've checked. But still, GRRR
Hum, now you know why it was still there.. Sounds like you got away with it. My CVH I think has a similar issue on one of the alternator bolts so I
don't think you are on your own on this one.. Never run the CVH without the bolt's in so cant comment, but they are always soaked in oil on
removal...

Mmmm you live and learn! I'm tempted to have another go round the block to set my mind at ease though!
Seems ok... figured out why the tickover is high. Hopefully no more frights before the new year is in
There's an old saying...
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
You've got to save those grammes though. If it's just the bolt holes, replace the bolts without the bracket.
