Can you bump start a BEC?
RickRick - 23/3/11 at 09:04 AM

I've not broken down or anything, just wondered if there's any reason why you shouldn't do it to a bike engine specificaly a r1 5vy

You can bump start a bike with a bit of energy and balance, so i dont see why you couldnt do this in a bec in second gear.

dont see why not , we used to bump start my mates motoX bike all the time
probably just gives the clutch a bit of a hard time

Yep, done it.

Yes you can. Mine lost all charge in the battery when stuck in traffic to get into Goodwood, it was early in the morning and had all my lights on, when I got to the roundabout I stalled it and had about 3 miles of traffic behind me, thankfully a couple of police bikers where on the roundabout and gave me push start

Depends - if it is EFi and the battery is completely flat it still won't start cos the fuel won't go in.

If it's carbs it probably will

Not recommended to bump start some bike engines as there is the possibility of a kickback and blowing the starter clutch and housing.
Was a problem on early Busa motors hence the aftermarket starter clutches and billet housings.....
This is also a problem if you spin a BEC and don't depress the clutch quick enough.

I was able to bump mine once when I cooked the stator, the battery still had some juice but not enough to spin the engine over quick enough. Problem was though (as other posts eluded to) is that if it's EFi and it's not charging it all (as mine wasn't) then eventually the fuel pump / ecu / injectors / spark plugs will drain what power is left and you'll stop. So I ended up calling the recovery truck in Dover rather than crawl to a stop in the Dartford tunnel or similar!

Yes did it last weekend when stalled couldn't get neutral and stuck in an awkward spot.

Another plus for a CEC! lol

I've bump-started my Busa a couple of times, and a friend's R1 BEC bump started fine also.

Any bike engine can be bump started without any risk to clutches, starters or anything else.

It's going backwards that bike engines don't like. If you spin and end up going backwards the starter clutch engages, then tries to go to a million rpm, then promptly explodes, often taking bits of engine case with it.

If you spin, dip the clutch.....

Edited to correct rubbish spelling

....and a reason to bypass the neutral switch /starter restriction. Its on the list.

Get it done. I did mine last year and it makes life a lot easier... If nothing else, "sods law" says you'll never stall again.

Ive bumped mine off before when the battery was too low to start the engine. i did struggle though as it was a damp day, and every time the car was rolling and the clutch released the car would just skid to a halt as there wasnt enough weight in the car to crank against the engine
