OK I have an R1 engine & need to know about some mods to put it in a car.
1) I bought an extra diaphragm spring 'cos folks have said just put another spring in to get more pedal feel. Is it really just as simple as that??
2) There was a clutch basket related recall of early R1's - I believe the fix was simply to radius the corners of some square holes in the clutch area - confirmation would be nice so I can A) check mine's been done and B) if not, do it myself with a file......
3) What oil to use - everybody has a different, strongly held opinion - anything except fully synthetic seems to be a common factor. With 2 diaphragm springs on the clutch would it be worth thinking about fully synth for its other undoubted advantages?

Hi Bob,

1) This will be fine. Sidecar racers tend to do a barnett clutch conversion but the spring doubling works well.
2) Dunno, as I recall problem was only on 98 engines.
3) I've run my R1 on Redline 10W40 fully synthetic no probs. As long as its specifically bike oil it will be made with wet clutches in mind. The R1 clutch basket is pretty high so is more immune to this "problem" than others. Some people have reported that they get less problems if the frictions have been soaked overnight in mineral oil first. After that no probs with fully synth.

By the way, use the standard R1 frictions, they work fine.

If you intend tot ake the car on a track, don't forget to put in a sump baffle plate to help prevent oil surge. Simpler to do when the engine is out of the car :-)
