How many threads show on your nuts?

My factory-built MK Indy-R is fitted with 15" Team Dynamics wheels.
I've just been sleeving the brake pipes to prevent chaffing on the chassis and decided to give my white wheels a clean, (daft colour to pick). I was struck by how little the wheel nuts grip the hub.
The screw-thread on the hub is recessed into the nut to the extent that I can see around 8 threads 'unused' on the nut.
Is this standard?

I was told minimum of 6 turns for 1.5mm pitch threads and 9 turns for 1mm pitch. Ive also heard a minmum of 1.5 threads exposed from the nut, but thats hard to judge if you have captive head nuts.

Sounds like you need longer studs, usually at least the same amount of engagement as the diameter of the thread so if they are M12 then at least 12mm of stud should be in the nut.

My wheelbrace is 17mm, so doesn't fit the wheel-nuts, otherwise I'd oik one off and see what depth of thread is gripping.
The hub studs are countersunk into the nuts by 11mm and 7 or 8 threads.
I've emailed MK for advice.
Just doesn't look secure, but without knowing what's gripping, (only what's not), I'm in limbo.
I'll buy another wheelbrace manana for starters.
