Noticed that my 2008 R1 engined indy is making some rattly sounds and vibrating a fair bit in neutral, yet push the clutch in and it disappears.
So decided to jack the rear up and see what sounds it makes in gear, and it making a worrying amount of rattling at low revs, doesn't sound too
bad with a few more revs.
What do you guys think? is this normal or do i have a problem?
Cheers
Sounds like too much backlash in the diff or output shaft.

erfectly normal. Horrible, but normal.
Rattle you describe with wheels on ground is most likely clutch basket wear.
Unless you have other symptoms I'd leave it until you do.
Thinking about it, i did notice a fair bit of play in the diff output flanges?
The diff is a Sierra LSD.
Is this a case of the diff needs rebuilding ASAP or will it be ok for a while and just put up with the noise.
At the end of the day, i would rather it be the diff that the gearbox.

Thanks, one less thing to worry about.
There's probably a a little end float in the clutch basket. There is in a lot of 04-06 R1's. That causes a bit of chatter in neutral but it
goes with pressure on the clutch as that damps it out. Mines been doing it for 18000miles. Andy Bates tol me he'd seen it in most 5VY
R1's.
The noise when you've got it jacked up is normal (if alarming) on a BEC. With no flywheel to even out the rotation of the crank between the power
pulses. That sets up the chattering in the transmission. try it with a Freelander diff(a lot more backlash than a Sierra) and you'll think yours
is quiet.

U had the same noise and my prop shaft bolts were loose !!!
