where to get tacho for bec dash
Lightning - 23/10/12 at 08:36 PM

The tacho I have reads twice the revs due to waste spark. Where can I get a tacho for dash mounting to suit a 4 cylinder bike engine up to say 12000 revs?

what ecu and dash do you have atm

Lightning - 23/10/12 at 08:45 PM

stock zzr1200 ecu general flat dash

do you have the full zzr1200 loom?
a set of zzr clocks could be used and you could probably sell your gauges for more than the price of a set.
failing that im sure you could disconnect your tacho feed and fit another.there are a few digitaal tachos on ebay but cant vouch for there quality!

Which tacho do you have at the moment? I had the same problem with a revotec (caerbont) gave them a buzz and they sorted it out foc.

Am I right in thinking your tacho reads up to 12000, but your actual revs read twice what they should, ie read 6000rpm at 3000rpm actual revs?? If so you should be able to fix it with a few simple diodes. I had a similar problem when my tacho signal packed up from the ecu, so I took a signal from one of the coil packs.....

Depending on tacho it might be reprogrammable.....

Dont exactly what it is. It is Kawaski however, not the zzr1200 though. oh and yes it reads 12000 when it actually is doing 6000 revs

It can be sorted with Diodes as said previously someone will no doubt be along in a moment to tell you how.

I'm pretty sure no amount of diodes are going to help, the rev counter needs to see less pulses per revolution not more.

4cl distributor and coil = 2 pulse per revolution
4cyl wasted spark =1 pulse per revolution (same as 2 cylinder engine)
1cyl engine = 0.5 pulse per revolution (1pulse every 2 revs)

So you can see that if you use diodes so that tacho sees 2pulse /rev then it will over read by 4x, or that's what I see, but I'm not very sober

I would guess if it's a new ish tacho it was probably run from the ecu and not the coil.

I would recomend CAI (caerbont) purely on the good service I recieved.

I used an Acewell, easily adjusted.

Aprilia rs125 rev counter is red-lined at 11kRPM but reads to 14k.
(it is 2 cyl, 2 stroke, so expects 1 spark per revolution)

This works fine on my wasted spark gsxr1100 and reads the correct RPM.

You can pick up a rev counter on e-bay for £15 and there are loads out there, black background, white needle, around 2003 model.
