help needed with new hayabusa loom
daniel mason - 2/1/13 at 08:42 PM

i have the sbd hayabusa loom and mbe 992 ecu on my caterham and am assuming i no longer need the standard busa reg/rec ? as there is no where to re connect into new loom?
am i correct in thinking its job is to regulate voltage and send surplus voltage to keep battery charge topped up? cheers

Hi Daniel,

You definately do need the rectifier/regulator but it is possible that you don't see any connection in the new type harness.
Although I have not seen the new harness, I can imagine how to deal with this and it does not need to go into or out of the new loom.
On your engine you will see 3 wires coming out of the generator coloured yellow. They are quite a thick wire so should be identifiable. Your Rec/Reg will have a 6 block connector with 5 wires in it. 3 black wires to connect to the 3 yellow wires from the generator. Usually this is done via the wiring harness but in your case, can be connected straight to the generator. There are 2 other wires on your rec/ regulator, 1 black/white and 1 red. These are 1 common earth wire (black/white) and 1 common live wire (red). Normally, the 1 red wire would be connected via your starter relay. This has a large 30 amp fuse in it and will protect the car against a short in the rec/reg. If you still intend to use the original starter relay you can connect the red wire to the fused side of the relay. The black/white wire needs to go to a very good earth. Depending on where you mount your rec/reg will depend on how you connect it to earth. I strongly advise connection to the crankcase and then you can use the heavy earth cable to connect to your negative terminal of your battery. The rec/reg needs cold air flow over it so mounting in the engine bay towards the front of the car is good. they get very hot so it is a good idea to mount it using the original plate to allow air to circulate around it.

If this is clear as mud, you may wish to contact me via U2U.
