Is a reverse a legal requirement?
Gear Monkey - 25/4/14 at 08:21 PM

Hi Guy's,

Weighing up the pro's and con's of ditching the MX5 idea and going down the BEC route. Are there any (potentially expensive) legal issues with bike power? Do I need a reverse?? Etc??

Thanks

Paul

I order to pass IVA you must have a reverse. For a BEC that means either an electric reverse set-up (starter motor driving a sprocket on the prop) or a reverse gearbox on the prop.

Once through IVA there's no requirement to keep it (and it wasn't required back when the test was SVA).

Thank you! Electric option may be the way to go for cost reasons then.

I'm not sure about this but doesnt the IVA have issues with people using a starter motor as an electric reverse. I seem to remember a post about it somewhere on here.

Not as long as it works. Plenty have passed with electric reverse.

The current draw does tend to be enough to stall the engine though and many fit a BIG battery to overcome this.

To comply with road going class in hill climbs and sprints you need a reverse.

It's also rather handy in autotests
