Can't select second on new setup
greavesy7 - 1/4/15 at 07:38 PM

Just been out for first test drive in my BEC conversion can select first but can't get into second any ideas ?

minitici - 1/4/15 at 07:44 PM

You do know that 2nd is in the opposite direction from 1st on a BEC gearbox?

adithorp - 1/4/15 at 07:52 PM

So does it just stay in first or go into neutral or what? Is it just 2nd that's missing and then it selects 3/4/5/6? Paddle shift or stick?

greavesy7 - 1/4/15 at 08:07 PM

Yeah I know about the 1n23456

The clutch engages because when in first you can press the cluch then the car will roll.

The engine is in 1st when driving but when try and push it into second it won't go

Not enough throw on linkage/cable set up?

So when you go for second you get neutral, but it won't go through neutral to second?

Check for any play in the linkages.

Had to replace mine when to much play as it wouldn't select second etc.

What did you repelCe ?

Linkage rods or cable?

Zx9 gearbox has 3 balls installed in second gear that have to be flung out by centrifugal force in order to allow the gear to slide into mesh - this prevents selection of anything but 1st when the vehicle is static. if the engine has sat for a long time they may have become gummed up and stuck - we used to remove them I. The race motors because they caused a fair few issues.
Not definately your issue but a possible cause

Sounds like your linkage/cable is just not moving far enough. If you disconnect it from the lever on the 'box can you manually select gears at the 'box?

Might be the lever hitting something or the leverage needs changing, etc.

Anybody close to stafford ?

Get some pics up of your linkage.

As above,Kawasakis won't allow you to select any other gear static apart from first.

All sorted now it was a linkage issue that wasn't giving me the full travel.

What's a safe rpm to go to on a zx9

Good to hear
Safe up to the rev limiter at 12200rpm. But a sensible limit would be around 11500, unfortunately the sound of the engine at 12000 is a little bit addictive

You have to be very positive when shifting gear at high revs, basically a very quick, firm push/pull on the lever.
You can change up without the clutch, if you are brave enough!

It's actually recommended on the way up, and optional on the way down - depends how good you are at throttle blipping going down!

Hewlett advice

When I had my zx9 in my striker it would pull to 12000rpm in every gear no clutch on the way up but used the clutch most of the time on the way down lots of fun and a real licence loser on the road 😄 great fun.
