For the last couple of years an Kawasaki 1100 zzr engine has been sitting in the garage in bits. The engine was taken (I think) from a '93 bike,
after one of the big end bearing ran dry. Since the Locost idea has come along the idea has always been in the back of my head to repair and use
it...
The bearing that ran dry, in the process, damaged that rod and crank lobe. The rest of the engine seems to have survived, however it is also missing
the loom and carbs.
The question is..Is it worth it? Would it be possible to repair the crank and would the cost of a replacment rod, loom and carbs (2nd hand) work out
more than buying a complete engine 2nd hand?
Thanks,
Andy
personally, id buy a new one and use the old for bits. sounds a bit of a mess about having to put it all back together. unless you like fiddling, that is
Bike gaskets can be super expensive. That alone could be enough to make it crazy.
I agree, the same happened to my first blade and looking into it, getting the crank repaired would cost around £200 and wouldnt be as good as original (it would be more succeptable to any oil starvation in future due to the replating process they use). On top of that obviously youve got to source a rod and all the bearings / gaskets etc so you are looking at probably £600 in parts alone.
Thanks for your thoughts chaps, you have all confirmed my thoughts... Another engine it is!
What do people think of this engine for BEC use? Are they easy to come by?
Andy
I'm using the ZZR1100 engine in my Indy. Colin sorted me out with it for less than the cost of a blade or R1.
I used it because of a couple of good reviews in Kit Car and Which Kit of the Dax Rush with the ZZR1100 engine in it.
Only problems so far were that the splined adaptor had to be made specially, rather than off the shelf as for blades and Zx9r's. Oh and the fact
it has a hydraulic clutch. Just using another Girling type M/C.
Good luck if you do go down this route. (I have reviews of the engine in the Rush if you want).

Those articles would be nice, Mike, cheers.
Have you had chance to run/drive the car the car yet, if so what are your views on it. The engine can't be bad as the original clubsport Radicals
used them and they used to be almost as quick as Vx powered supersport cars.
Andy
Andy, I'll sort out those articles tonight.
No I haven't got it running yet. I've got a rolling chassis, engine in, drive train and brakes sorted. In middle of a muddle of wiring,
plumbing and looking for an exhaust at the minute. Aim to get done for a blat down to Stafford next year.
Cheers Mike
P.S. See other thread about the sump!!
