I have prety much decided to go down the BEC route but am not sure which engine to go for, either a pre '95 no cat required engine or a
comes-with-cat-and-lambda-sensor-already type.
Which bike engines come with lambda sensor and cat as fitted on the bike (just fit bigger cat and go)
which engines are 10 years old already and still good for a kit car and don't need a cat.
In case it helps, I'm thinking of building an MK indy.
I think you'll find that hardly any bikes come with a cat, and those that do can meet bike emission regs but struggle to meet car emission regs for SVA. The better and more proven route is to hire / buy a proper cat system from one of the kit car suppliers and use that.
if its an Mk yr building they have plenty of experience getting BEC's thru emissions and have all the gear to do it as Chris suggested.
My current plan is to install my 2003 FI R1 engine in the car with a stainless manifold from MNR which will, presumably, end with a single outlet
pointing backwards.
Then initially I'll attach the smallest car cat I can find at the local scrappers to the outlet and then fabricate a link to a bike silencer.
This won't look great but will do the job (I think).
Then replace it with a stainless link pipe to the silencer after the big day.
Does this sound feasable?
Where does the lambda sensor attach normally, is to the cat or before or after the car?
Regards,
Mark
Money no object, I would use an R1 injection and a car cat. This aught to pass SVA. I would probably leave it that way as welll. R1 injections are
EXPENSIVE.
what I want to know is "what other bike engines are catalysed." and also "which pre '95 engines are any good for kit
cars."
anyone?
quote:Not that many bikes have cats and, as has already been said, the ones that do probably don't have a cat sufficient in size to ensure you bec passes sva from what I've heard.

smallest car cat would be off the new mini and lambda senser is positioned in end of the downpipe before the cat
quote:Good find. I think if I was going to keep it on then it would be a good deal but I'm probably going to go for something off an old fiesta. It'll look shite, granted, but it'll fall off as soon as I get home.

Won't it then fail the MOT? I'm sure the newest MOT regs call for emissions tests or is that just Diesels still?
quote:Yes it would but my understanding is that the SVA exempts you from an MOT for 3 years and I'll just keep the cat system in the loft until it's required.
