Just got a CBR 1000 Hurricane full bike that was crash damaged.Im not familiar with motorbikes so i have some questions
1: When i turn the key oil light comes on, is this to show oil is low or that the light is working?
2:does anyone know if i have to prime the fuel system, is it pumped or gravity fed?
I`m getting the engine to turn over on battery power but the engine won`t fire,it has some petrol in it but not alot
3: would it be worth putting more in it?
I intend to save the engine unit, loom, clocks is there anything else worth removing which i may find useful.
4: when turning the engine over i have to hold the clutch in regardless of whether its in neutral otherwise the electronic starter will just not
operate is this true of all bikes or is a fault?
5:Is there any pictures of this engine in the bay of an indy anywhere.
ta Dan..
Oil light will be a pressure light rather than level. When the engine isnt running there is obviouisly no oil pressure so the light being on is what
you want!
I seem to recall that the CBr1000 has a fuel pump but I may be wrong, either way it might be worth drainign off the old fuel and putting fresh in it
unless you know its only been crashed in the last few months. If its sat at the breakers for a year or so the petrol might have gone off or even
gummed up the fuel lines and carbs a little.
The clutch situation it an intentional thing on most bikes to stop the rider accidentally starting it in gear and lurching forward. Usually its just a
switch on the clutch lever somewhere so by shorting these wires out will bypass this. Likewise you may have a cut-out wired into the sidestand so that
it cant be started unless its up.
E-mail me directly and I'll forward you a startup checklist I wrote for my blade, Im not sure how relevent it would be but it may give you some
clues to why its not starting
Chris
1: When i turn the key oil light comes on, is this to show oil is low or that the light is working?
A: As Chris says, *should* go out when engine starts, signifiying that you have oil pressure.
2:does anyone know if i have to prime the fuel system, is it pumped or gravity fed?
A: I think it depends on age of CBR. I'm sure (but not 100%) that early ones were gravity fed. Probably best to whip the tank off, and have a
look. While it is off, you can do other things like check for spark etc. If it is gravity fed, or if the pump is working, you can take the airbox off
and squirt a little bit of fuel into the carb intakes. Sometimes thats required to help the engine to start pulling the fuel out of the carbs...
I`m getting the engine to turn over on battery power but the engine won`t fire,it has some petrol in it but not alot
3: would it be worth putting more in it?
A: Check the above first. Again, as Chris says, the existing fuel may be stale, so purchasing a couple of gallons will suffice to flush tank out (when
its removed), and squirt a drop into intakes...
I intend to save the engine unit, loom, clocks is there anything else worth removing which i may find useful.
A: Hard to say. Mirrors? Indicators?
4: when turning the engine over i have to hold the clutch in regardless of whether its in neutral otherwise the electronic starter will just not
operate is this true of all bikes or is a fault?
A: Again, as Chris says. However, Are you trying to start it with the sidestand down? If so, it *might* be wired so that it is an either/or scenario,
i.e. you either need the clutch in or the sidestand up.
5:Is there any pictures of this engine in the bay of an indy anywhere.
A: Dunno.
HTH Stu.
It could start in neutral with the sidestand down or up. Some cut out when the clutch is let out and others not till the gear lever moves. Check the kill switch on the handlebar controls as well, they are easy to flick over by accident.
Agree with above - am using CBR 1000 engine and so any feedback on the problem would be really helpful - havent got round to fitting mine to the car
yet!
95% certain its the kill switch on the handlebar - soooo many recovery vehicles sent to bikes for this - one of the first things I learnt on my CBT!
With the kill-switch on the engine wil turn but not fire - with the sidestand down the engine wont even turn over - likewise if the engine isnt in
neutral (green light illuminates on the dash)
Good luck - let us know how it goes!
Cheers
Geoff
The CBR1000 uses gravity fed on all models, as did the 600. Difference is some used a straightforward gravity feed, and some used a vacuum valve (relied in the inlet vacuum to open the tap and allow more fuel to flow). Problem I ran into was when I used a Facet Red Top pump and Malpassi (aka Filter King)pressure regulator. The carbs didn't like the pulsing of the pump. I got around it by putting a return line in, via a T-piece, with a restrictor (old main jet!) in the return line to ensure the carbs remained fed. There is a screw, accessible with a flat bladed driver, on each float which will allow you to drain off stale fuel. If in doubt just ensure the floats are full, no fuel feed. It should start. as Jambobeef implies, eliminate the bike ignition isolators, neutral switch on some models, plus sidestand. If you need a circuit diagram shout and I'll scan one for you. Hope this all helps. By the way I've come by some R1 throtlle bodies, just need the Megasquirt fuel pump, crank sensor/toothed wheel and EDIS unit.......
My CBR 1000 manual mentions a fuel pump and i have enquired about a reb CBR 1000's that are being broken on E-bay as to whether the owner has the pump still and both times it has already been sold so it would appear thet not all were gravity fed - its the only bit of my set up that im missing at present
