long distance
Dillinger1977 - 18/3/05 at 12:44 PM

im looking to get a lightweight bike engined car for track jollies, but im quite taken with the idea of touring round europe in a '7, so im wondering how the bike engine would cope with something like that.

Anyone use a BEC for any long distance type running, and have any comments/advice?

thanks

A couple of hundred miles is do-able, but I wouldnt want to go round Europe in one! I guess if the car was built to accomodate it better (ie heater, screen, weather gear, higer gearing etc) then it wouldnt be much worse than any other Caterfield, but if you put all those things on a BEC you lose half the advantages of it, ie light weight and manic gearing for maximum acceleration.
There was a thread discussing this a couple of months ago on here, so it might be worth doing a search

I would agree with Chris, 200-300 miles per day max.

An aeroscreen and full body can help with the longer distances as it shelters you from alot of the wind / noise.

I wouldn't like to attempt it - but in small spans it would be very interesting!

all good points, perhaps I should scale it down to a series of tiny journeys, and just stick to the UK

I've just booked the ferries for driving from Northern Ireland to the Nurburgring.
I'm planning on about 2-300 miles a day for 3 days to get there, round the ring a few times, then another 900 miles back! I suspect it's gonna be quite a haul, but I'm looking forward to it.
My car seems quite quiet and is fairly tall geared so it's not too bad for cruising about.
Even so...... The most I've covered in a day before is about 200, and it is a looooong jouney in a BEC.....

Mind you I have a mate who has toured round france in his locost blade without problems, seemed to enjoy himself.
Cheers
