Carbs or injection on R1
Ben Smith - 29/3/05 at 09:55 PM

Which would be best taking a few things in to account

1, SVA emisions.
2, Tuning later on as a N/A engine.
3, Possibilty of adding supercharger or turbo.

Thanks
Ben.

Seeing as all R1s are newer than 1995 then I would say injection all the way, on the proviso that you get a Power Commander or similar so you can adjust the fuelling.
With carbs whenever you need to change the fuelling, you need to re-jet the carbs, with FI, you just change the setting on the Power Commander via a laptop. You can also control the emissions easier by just leaning it off for SVA etc, you could even have an "SVA map" that you just switch to when you go for the MOT/SVA!
As to turbo/supercharging, depending on the boost you run you might need additional injectors anyway, but FI should still give you a better base to start from than carbs.

early carbed R1s are half the price of the newest FI ones. Do you need the 170 BHP that much more than the 150?

On the other hand, R1s with a cat can sometimes pass SVA as the are, or so I am told. Most of the rest of them can pass if you fit a bigger cat from a car. with carbed engines you need a full air bleed system with a cat, again, so I am told.

I was assuming we were talking about the 2002/2003 FI engine which is the same power as the carb engine, and not much dearer to buy. The 2004/5 175bhp one isnt really proven yet in BECs, and as you say - a fair bit more expensive.
