Blade airbox with or without?
phil_far - 3/5/05 at 04:17 PM

Gents,
What is the best set-up using teh bike's original airbox or the Stage 3 jetting kit?
My engine is a 95 893cc Fireblade

The BEC wisdom always seemed to be to run an open filter and dynojet it, but virtually all the RGB race guys now run airboxes (either stock or tarty after market ones) with ducting to get in the cold air. I reckon on the rolling road you'd probably see slightly higher figures from an open filter, but when the engine bay temps get up high its going to produce more power with nice cold air than when sucking really hot air.
On my R1 Im going to run an airbox, as much to keep induction noise down as help power. Ive also got an open filter so if I get time on the rollers I will try both to see which is best - if the airbox is best then it will stay on all the time, if the panel filter is significantly better then I might have two maps, one for airbox / quiet trackdays, and one for other times (although obviously this is more tricky to do with carbs unless you have two sets to play with)

making a BEC is a bit like consessions the minor you made them the better the car will be...

The airbox is an very very important piece of your engine.

it can make or break an engine same as your exhaust... think about as an music instrument changing the volume of a gitarbox is vital to the sound it produces...

its the same with and engine..you don't want that the incoming air bounces in the box etc....

short:

Keep the original, and rout tube to the fresh air and hook it up close to the entrance of the box...

On the rolling road I got more power with the airbox than without

hmmm i got more power and smoother curve without airbox useing a piperx filter

Ok, so the airbox does make sense then!

Does that mean that I do not have to re-jet my crabs then? Do I use teh stock filter in the airbox?

Hi Phil

If you use the stock airbox and filter, then you are more likely to get away without re-jetting, although the exhaust manifold / silencer could have an effect on it too. For example on the bikes when you put on an aftermarket silencer you sometimes need to re-jet even though the induction side of things hasnt changed.
