Dials Dilema
Avoneer - 14/6/05 at 09:47 AM

Hi people.

Just having a dilema wrapping my head around the various options for dials etc.

I need a tacho, a speedo, a water temp gauge, an oil pressure gauge and my warning lights.

I currently have my blade clocks that will sort out some of the warning lights, the water temp and the tacho.

I also have an SPA oil temp/pressure gauge.

Easiest and best option would be a Digidash2 - but too pricey.

I could use the blade clocks, but don't like the sounds of trying to get the speedo to work - I have a '97 engine and '98/'99 loom and dials which use the sensor that bolts onto the crankcase (but not on my engine).

I could buy ETB's rev counter, water temp and oil pressure gauge and use a bike computer for the speedo and a bright6 module for the warning light.

Thinking about it, do I really need a rev counter???

I never look at the one on my Tiger.

That would simplify things.

Any ideas, suggestions?

Hi Pat

Maybe someone could put an oscilloscope on their 98/99 blade speedo sender whilst turning their engine over, you would then know how many pulses per prop revolution it pulsed, and could then make up a suitable trigger wheel to mimic it on your prop.
If that's not a go-er what you could possibly do is just run the blade clocks for revs, water temperature and the tell-tale lights, plus a bike speedo just for speed / trip. If you mounted the blade clocks flush in the dash you might be able to mount them so that you effectively hide the speedo part of it, and only see the right hand side of the dash.
Also don't forget that the ETB stuff wont work on the blade water temperature sender, so if going that route you'd need to seperately mount that in the top hose or something.

I would say a rev counter is a must though TBH, especially when on track because otherwise you'll be using the rev limiter to know when to shift, which isnt ideal and doesnt do the engine much good in the long term.

Ok, so I definately need a rev counter.

Hi Chris - still pondering on the blade clocks and speedo - Maybe I can try and get hold of whatever trigger wheel is directly under the sensor from a knackered engine and use that with the sensor on the prop somewhere - that would work wouldn't it?

It should do yeh, although I have a feeling that it might trigger directly off one of the gears themselves, which might be tricky to replicate.
As long as you can get it within the range of what a speedohealer / Yellowbox can adjust though, you should be OK so you dont necessarily need to have as many triggers as the bike itself sees.

Hi Pat:

Didn't you buy Chris' 98 engine/clocks? He had them working together, right?

OK, I was in this dilema recently myself. My options were to use a Suzuki tacho I bought off eBay and use individual gauges for oil pressure/temp, water temp and speedo. I also could have used the Mychron cluster which in my opinion is very nice. These two options would have cost the same amount of money.

In the end, I went with the Blade clocks and a oil pressure/temp gauge. I still have the Suzuki tacho that is now spare. You're welcome to try it out for a small amount of beer money + post. It has a white face and honestly looks good.

U2U if interested in pics, etc.

Hi,

Chris - if we can find out which gear ring it works off, I'm sure I could adapt the gear ring to go somewhere on the prop - might be the easiest way???

Off topic I know, but which fuel pump do I need?

ChrisF - many thanks for the kind offer, but looks like at the moment I'm gonna try and go the blade clocks route - but I'll remember when I give up and/or have no hair left.

Cheers,

Pat...

Pat,
I'm fitting a'94 893cc blade engine and want to use the blade clocks mounted behind the dash. Because the speedo is cable driven, I'll have to ditch it and intend to replace it with a VDO electronic one from the likes of Lowtension. Looks wise, I reckon it would be a good match to the original.
Does the '98 engine still use carbs?
If so, then I believe most people recommend using the original 'Blade fuel pump. (That's what I'm about to fit.)
They're about £25 from a breakers. Might be worth doing a search on ebay.

Andy.

I'm making a small batch of dash's;

photos in my archive (these are prototype - pukka ones don't have the cuts/straps)
so shout if you're interested - 220 notes

Yep I'd go with an ebay / breaker sourced bike pump too.

Chris - I originally had a 99 engine hence why I used the clocks and a Yellowbox, but when I had problems with that, I replaced it and could only source a '97 at the time, which is the engine Pat now has - hence why there's no speedo sender hole in the engine. When I fitted that I just made do for the summer without the speedo

Hi,

Just U2U'd MarcN and he managed to get the earlier clocks to work with the sensor from the later blade and a couple of magnets on the prop - there is hope after all!

I'll have to get myself a speedo sensor and play with some magnets and a yellow box I think - Chris, did I end up with a speedo sensor and have one hiding somewhere in my garage?

Will work out cheapest of all the solutions.

Yep I think you might have one still tied into the loom, Im not 100% sure though
