the battery is my MK is knackerd. its a std 12v 40a car battery. do i buy a bike battery or just replace like for like? will the std car battery do any damage as i believe the bike battery is only 10a?

You can use either car or bike battery, the Ah (Amp Hour) rating doesnt matter as its basically just additional capacity so you could turn the engine over longer without it going flat, and the cranking current is how much current it can provide if required, but as long as they are above the minimum requirements for the engine, thats fine

A bike battery is significantly lighter though so is a good reason to choose one, something like a Yuasa/Varta YTX12. You can get them from Halfords etc but probably cheaper from somewhere like MDS Batteries who sponsor the RGB BEC race series so will be able to recommend the correct one.

Stick with what you've got unless you are after ultra-light weight. As long as it is 12v there will be no problems with a bigger amperage, and it will be more durable if, say, you are out at night and the alternater goes pop.

thanks a lot Chris. not to bothered about the extra few lbs. not going to slow the beast to much!!!! has been a pig to start as the choke wasnt connected!! killed the battery.

Yep, go with whatever is cheapest / best for you, the only other advantage of a lighter battery is that its significantly easier to mount a 3kg battery in the car securely than it is a 7-8kg one, however they do tend to die far more easily than a big car battery so if you havent got a battery conditioner charger (Optimate etc) to keep it alive over the winter then a car battery may be better.
