Going to Build a BEC, Need a few Q's Answered

Im wanting to build an R1 BEC,

Q: I Got these chassis plans of a website which someone used to Build a Zetec locost

Can i Build a chassis to these dimensions and then fit an R1 engine to them or do i need a diffrent chassis.

I have no problem Building the chassis and fabricating the mounts as im not bad with a welder ( My dads a Steel Fabricator) so not worried about the build just want to make sure i would be able to fit an R1 and sierra drive train in this chassis

Q: Is there an owners meet in the south i.e Poole/Southampton area

I suppose you can make anything fit anything if you really want and as the R1 lump is smaller than the zetec i'm sure it will fit. Why do you want to build it yourself Tim? Is it cos you just want the challenge or is it a cost thing? Cos if its cost sometimes the cheaper option turns out to be the most expensive in the long run! IMHO. Grahame

Built to the McSorley plans, a bike engine will fit no problems.
You'll get a huge amount of satisfaction from building it yourself (well I did anyway).
Dunno about a Poole / Bournemouth meet, but there's a New Forest meet at Cadnam every month.

The Mcsorley plans are well known in "locost world" and will accept the R1 with ease. However be a little careful as you may have dificulty finding bodywork that will be a good fit. Unless you're intending to make all of that yourself as well in which case it won't be a problem.

Depending on your build are you sure you need the extra room?

This is my MK's engine bay before I fitted the body work, and I think I could (almost) get another engine in there, between the rad and the engine.

If I was doing this all again, I'd look at taking it down a size. The Indy has a Sierra track, but the transmission tunnel is quiet wide, so you can get a type 9 box in it. With a BEC, you just have the prop, so it could be a bit thinner there, making up the space in the cockpit. That way you'd still be able to use commercially available body work, but increase the cockpit space.

Same with the length, cut the exposed, or open bit of the cockpit down moving the back closer to the dash. Your feet go further into the engine bay, under the bonnet. Shorter wheelbase. Would have to use ally sides though?

Along with BKLOCO's comments, ive built mine to the mcsorley plans but bought my bodywork from GTS and isnt such a good fit(its about an inch wider overall at the front), however it might well be worth buying the GTS plans if you intend to use a dedion as this has the mods needed to the rear and also you have the added bonus the GTS bodywork would fit a treat.

We built 2 frames from McSorely's plans (he modified it for us to 2+2+2), so we could a standard nose. Scuttle would have to be +2", but we're making our own anyway. Fenders (sorry, wings), of course, no problem (although clamshells fit at an odd angle, and with our wide 15" wheels they're not an option at present). McSorely's plans, by the way, are excellent.
