Your all a bunch of *&%$£"
Duncan_P - 28/2/07 at 05:07 PM

As per title, you BEC lot are a pain in the ass.

I spend a significant amount of time plannnig my build and eventually get around to starting. But then it started, you keep posting video links and performance stats of your BEC and its polluting my mind.

All i wanted was a nice simple zetec build, and now 'you lot' have me seriously considering changing tack and changing to a BEC.

I hold you all fully responsible for torturing me, you bunch of so and so's.

Look into our eyes not around our eyes, look straight into the eyes!

BEC's Got Ya!

worX - 28/2/07 at 05:11 PM

(In the tune of the old Skol beer advert.......)
BEC BEC BEC BEC, BEC BEC BEC BEC.
BEC BEC BEC BEC, BEC BEC BEC BEC.
and if anyone's forgotten the words, as per the advert - the next line goes:
BEC BEC BEC BEC, BEC BEC BEC BEC.

It happened to me too, i was all for a nice simple cheap live axle cross flow job, now three axles later i'm building an r1 de dion axled bec!!!!!!

I hate (read love) you all!!!

Duncan_P - 28/2/07 at 05:21 PM

I should have known that posting this would have only made matters worse......

I hope your all proud of yourselves

TimC - 28/2/07 at 05:23 PM

I'm building one, but wouldn't for the road.

Mostly as I have no self control!

ch1ll1 - 28/2/07 at 05:25 PM

you might even find going the BEC is cheaper

I dont want to here it

millemg - 28/2/07 at 05:29 PM

Just think of a comparison.....

racing car / taxi ?

BenB - 28/2/07 at 05:32 PM

Similar thing happened to me.... Went to the kit car show determined to buy a STM kit for a Live axle Xflow Locost, came back having paid a deposit for a IRS ST1100 BEC Locost.... Oh well

russbost - 28/2/07 at 05:37 PM

Surely bec has to be simpler than a lumbering great zetec & type 9! At least the gearshifts simple!

russbost - 28/2/07 at 05:38 PM

Now all you need to do is put the engine at the right end!

(Takes cover)

I have enough tortured sleepness nights at the moment without adding to it

andrew.carwithen - 28/2/07 at 05:46 PM

Yup, I started out with the intention of using the pinto that was already fitted when I bought my Avon part-built. (Nice and simple and straight forward.)
But then, I went out in Lightning's 'blade powered Avon (when he still had it.)
A few days later, I was still wandering around aimlessly, grinning insanely muttering 'I just gotta get me one of those...' and the rest is history...

Andy.

Ye Right thats what you think. The first car I had was CEC and they say you learn by your mistakes.

Carl

ch1ll1 - 28/2/07 at 06:09 PM

my first one was a bec, still cost loads
2nd one im building now is a zetec and just spent £1000 on inlet manifold and ecu

can get a good gsxr lump for that !

shortie - 28/2/07 at 06:28 PM

Mmmmm....paddleshift, lovely racing car feel!!

bodger - 28/2/07 at 06:43 PM

Yep they did it to me too ...... b*stards!!

David Jenkins - 28/2/07 at 06:43 PM

I keep advocating moderation, saying how calm and collected I am as I drive around in my nice crossflow-powered car....
...but, if I'm ever unfortunate enough to blow it up, it'll probably be replaced by a nice healthy bike engine!

I built a Tiger 6 with a Zetec and although it was pretty quick it ended up costing a fortune.
Engines themselves are cheap enough but its all the other bits such as shortened sump, manifold, Dellortos, ECU, lightweight flywheel etc etc. My engine originally cost around £350 but was £2k before it was running. I then ended up with a £900 BGH gearbox as 1st and 2nd were too low even on 205/45/16 wheels.
In comparison to this (sorry for the plug - just an example of how cheap BEC's can work out) I have a ZX9R i am looking to sell presently on Ebay starting at £300. £30 - £40 for an ECU plus an air filter and jetting kit will give you 150bhp or so and a better power to weight ratio.
Having been out in a few BEC's from a Fireblade striker to a twin ZX12R Tiger (doing 2.8's to 60mph), even a Fireblade seemed so much quicker than a 173bhp Zetec I had - the extra 150kg you will generally end up adding makes such a huge difference.
I have now seen the light and am building a Tiger with a 2005 Yamaha R1. The engine cost me £650 and i have spent another £430 on a US loom / ECU to get around the coding issue. For this I am hoping for 180 - 190bhp and thick end of 400bhp / ton. Of course it depends what you want to use the car for that may make your mind up so really decide EXACTLY what you want from the car.

Paul

welderman - 28/2/07 at 07:22 PM

you can be a little on the large side if you want, eat more food etc, and still go faster.
BEC all the way.

Johnmor - 28/2/07 at 08:10 PM

It'll be just great driving round town, and the that ability to have to change gear every 3 secs will build the muscles in the left leg a treat.
Theres always those great long country roads when all that torque pays dividends(not)

However if you plan to race on a track every weekend then go for it.

Bike engines for bikes
Car engines for cars.

Its not rocket science.

stevec - 28/2/07 at 08:15 PM

No, car engines are for Tin Tops,
Bike engines are for cars like ours.

[Edited on 28/2/07 by stevec]

scoey m - 28/2/07 at 08:36 PM

10,000 rpm plus
Sequential gear box standard
Cheaper tax bracket
OH the list goes on

Yup, same problem here...... planning a nice sensible build and then I encounter language translations issues with Colin...........

Yes YOU do know what you did to me with that blast around Sheffield at Warp factor 9 on a damp Saturday morning!!!!

Cheers
Dave

Duncan_P - 28/2/07 at 11:30 PM

Your all evil i tell you!!

Especially Simon - V8......i have clouded my thinking enough without adding to it.

Bar Johnmor - the lone voice of reason

It is tempting, although TBH i have yet to blag a ride in a BEC....but that might seal my fate completely. Any tips on the best place to try and blag a ride? (although its probably a bad idea) Unfortunately its a bit far to MK just to try out one of the demonstrators.

RazMan - 28/2/07 at 11:44 PM

So why not do it properly and build a middy?

[takes cover]

Hellfire - 28/2/07 at 11:53 PM

Now look what I've done...

You've never driven a BEC then? You only need shift gear quickly because it accelerates so fast. As for long country roads, having so many revs makes them a dream.

Duncan_P - 1/3/07 at 12:29 PM

Its getting worse, i just caught myself looking at bike engines on ebay

Luckily i dont have the cash at the moment to buy one

matt.c - 1/3/07 at 08:19 PM

I blame OX for my BEC addiction!!!!

Then i also blame TEAM HELLFIRE for fueling my addiction with there video's!!

BEC BEC BEC BEC BEC BEC BEC

OX - 1/3/07 at 09:32 PM

i brought you in to the light my son,the addiction was allready in you ,,i just helped unleash it

locoboy - 1/3/07 at 09:38 PM

OX got me addicted too

Most would have been put off with the way he spun it on a roundabout and was staring into the eyes of oncomming traffic.......................

It has made me stronger

Duncan_P - 1/3/07 at 10:34 PM

Looks like you have got a lot to answer for OX

matt.c - 1/3/07 at 11:25 PM

we had the roundabout to ourselves sideways, but it was the cop car coming the other way that scared me!

zxrlocost - 2/3/07 at 09:46 AM

hes even got a drag strip outside the families house with a donut arena at the end
and I dont mean donuts to eat

Duncan_P - 2/3/07 at 10:09 AM

lol

**note to self 'Be mindful of accepting passanger rides from anyone called OX'**

Is it just me thats got a picture in there head of a donut shop at the end of the dragstrip and OX dashing down there Homer Simpson style

OX - 2/3/07 at 04:51 PM

pmsl,,havnt been out in the car since last august so the top of the road is donutless ,diff will be in soon tho and then it'll be back on the road. Bill Bourne got me into the becs,,he took me up the road for a quick spin and the following day i ordered my kit...im not sure when the next kitcar show is but if your going and my cars done i'd be happy to help sway your mind

Duncan_P - 2/3/07 at 05:32 PM

Thanks OX i might take you up on that (after i have taken into consideration the previous half dozen posts or so ) if i havnt jumped one way or the other by then....

....that blackbird kit that Mal had a while back looked tempting (im aware of the issues of choosing BB) but luckily/unfotunately the tintop needs some £££'s spent on it so i have a while to make up my mind

zxrlocost - 2/3/07 at 05:40 PM

havent been in it since August

OX - 2/3/07 at 05:46 PM

i was lazy and didint send off the amount of miles my car had done to adrian flux so they canceled my insurance which pi55ed me off and couldnt justify spending more money for only a few months of nice weather

zxrlocost - 2/3/07 at 05:52 PM

do you want me to insure it for you

you can borrow my fairlady twin turbo!

JoelP - 2/3/07 at 10:48 PM

becs rule. I think it was wadders that i should blame myself, but time and adrenalin has clouded things somewhat.
