Noisy R1 Clutch / Gearbox|
lsdweb - 7/9/07 at 09:27 PM

Hi All

I've just picked up a 'spare' 5VY engine which I bought cheaply because it had a 'broken' gearbox. It apparently runs OK and selects gears and will run, but the box 'clonks' continually. When it's turned over by hand a loud clicking noise comes from the clutch housing - any thoughts before I try and strip it down?

Regards

Wyn

I almost did! When I bought the 'car' originally it had a Hewland box and I had the Zetec from my '7' sitting next to it.

I hope it's the clutch basket - a relatively simple and cheap repair - not a bad buy for £321 if that's all that 's wrong!

Early (ie late 90's) baskets were rubbish but since then theyve been OK.

It could be one of the plates has broken up which is then clonking against the basket as it rotates, or even the anti-squeal ring as they've been known to get chewed up if installed incorrectly.

I've just checked the clutch actuation arm and that doesn't seem to have any movement - not sure where it's supposed to sit but it doesn't move.

Just pop the cover off and see what's inside Wyn, hopefully not as bad as my gearbox "issue"

Thanks Chris - hopefully sometime Sunday (got an exercise with the military tomorrow so won't get a chance)

I've seen your post on your mashed gearbox - if it's any help, I've got a 5JJ gear cluster you can have for just the postage - not sure if this would fit in your engine though.

Wyn

Ok. I've pulled the clutch basket out and it all looks OK.

If I hold the shaft going from the clutch basket into the gearbox and turn the output shaft / sprocket I get a loud clicking noise like it's jumping teeth on a gear somewhere. Sounds like a gearbox fault?

Any thoughts?

If it is, how difficult is it to split the engine to get at it - do I need to take the head off?

Regards

Wyn

Hi Wyn

Im not sure about your engine but I imagine its similar layout to the 5PW and if so, no you don't need to take the head off (despite what Haynes manual says!), just need a methodical approach and a couple of hours spare to take all the ancilliary bits off before undoing all the bolts that hold the block together.

The tricky bit on mine was getting the stator off the end of the crank as you may have read in my post, but I think I read somewhere that the later engines like yours bolt this on differently and is a lot easier to get off. If not I now have a tool I made which you could borrow.

You'll have u2u regarding the gear cluster in a few minutes

Chris
