ZX9R Resistor
mistergrumpy - 10/12/07 at 02:59 PM

just a quick question cos my engine now won't start. Would it still turn over if the resistor was knackered? I think I may have damaged it whilst soldering it and I can't find my spare

Hi there

Just had a quick look at the wiring diagram. If you are using the original bike junction box and safety circuits it looks like the ECU will need powered up to crank the engine.

The resistor should be 100 Ohm. If it is OK it's worth checking the safety circuits again as the next step.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Ian

Well it all worked fine until I soldered it up last night This is how I've done it with the Sierra ignition barrel and the bike loom

This look okay?
Oh the starter wires are not drawn on just the main ignition jiggery

Nae spark. Do we think it possible that whilst soldering the resisitor onto the grey wire (which terminates at the ingniter) I've knackered the igniter?

I would say it's your resistor, i know the soldering iron gets very hot, but i dont think it would damage your igniter.

Well yeah thats what I thought but I've got a couple new resistors and tested the one in place but its still 100 Ohms. The engine is turning over but there's no spark so I'm a bit stumped now

Hi there

So, before you soldered the resistor did it all work OK?

If yes, what have you changed / touched and this may give me more info to go on.

Cheers

It was all fine before yes. I had a bit of wire shorting the brown to the white and the grey via a resistor to the white and for the switch I was just touching the wire ends. What I did last night was to put crimps on the switch ends and plug them onto the savage switch and I cut the block off the brown grey and white wires. I then soldered the resistor onto the grey wire and t'other end to the white wire. I then soldered an extension piece onto the white wire then soldered the other end of this onto the red (+ve) of the sierra switch. I extended the brown wire similarly and the other end to the earth of the sierra switch. I now switch the key to middle and press my savage switch which turns the engine but won't fire it. I took out a plug and theres no spark between the plug and earth. Dunno what I've done

Someone hasn't given you a duff switch has he?!?

Have you checked for feed from the switch?

No mate, the switch is fine thanks. I've shorted it before the switch and its still the same

Hi there

Yes, that looks wrong! I've had a look at the ZX9R wiring.

White = +12V Supply (Battery) This should be on one side of the Sierra Switch.

Grey (with restistor inline) + Brown conected on the other side if using the bike loom.

That said, check that that you have the right wires from the sierra column as it sould of sparked if these wires are all being connected across the switch.

I'd short the wires accross at the column and see if it starts, if so you've wired the sierra switch wrong. If it deosn't the plot thickens!

Good luck!

Cheers

Ian

The plot thickens mate. I've reverted to how it was before the switch so literally I have a white a brown and a grey wire with a resistor fitted. It still won't generate a spark though I've no ideas left. I've checked the spark thingy that works off the rotor thingy and the resistances all work out. A bit stumped, it was all fine before I soldered

what model is it? Maybe try borrowing a cdi to test it (i have one for a c but it too is untested...) You would have had to be close to it to damage it though. My money would be on a loose connection somewhere

mistergrumpy - 13/12/07 at 10:31 PM

Ha ha! Went out for a bit of a play just over an hour ago with some connecting blocks. I have put two wires coming off the white one then connected the brown to one then the resistor to the other then I pressed the start button and hey presto, it started! it really caught me out I shat myself. the neighbours will be grumbling now, went with a right crack. anyways,i'm back on track again I just can't quite see how it worked but never mind eh!

I know it took me a while to get it right, very frustrating, but when it starts, it's the best feeling ever, pleased for ya.
