ZX9R air filter
MK9R - 2/1/08 at 01:09 PM

Just picked up my 2003 ST Locosaki, its fantastic, but the sausage filter sticking out of the bonnet looks a bit nasty IMO. I went to fit the scopp that came with the car, but it doesn't fit due to the height of the filter and the backing plate.

I could:-

  1. Buy a bigger scoop - But what?
  2. Make a bigger scoop - not really got time
  3. Replace the filter with induvidual socks - is this an option?/

It's usually regarded that Socks aren't the best filtration for our cars.

What material is the "cage" of your air filter made from?
Mine is Ali (but some are plastic) and I have managed to squash mine, just slightly, so that it clears my bonnet...

Its actually the plastic/metal backing plates that causing the biggest foul, i can squash the filter part down enough (foam and metal gauze)

I'll keep an eye on this subject - I'm currently building a "turbo" style air box (plenium chamber) for my ZX9. I'm not sure if it's going to work though

You can build an airbox as above, but have you tried turning the backing plate so that the tabs are at the lowest point?

I turned mine round and lost about 10mm in height at least...

Funny you have said that, i've just been thinking that myself

Shame the bonnet has been cut with tabs out for the fixings on the back plate

Yes, but your "bump" might actually cover them and fit then though?

The ST supplied scoop (from a mitsubishi L200 or something!) fits over a shallow filter.
To give some idea of the area covered by the scoop, look here
linky
Saturday 14th...

I found that the carbs themselves stuck a little over the bonnet line. I originally cut a hole that followed exactly the profile of the required cut-out. Unfortunately I couldn't remove the bonnet though without a little more widening
I don't actually mind the filter sticking out of the bonnet though

ZX9 airboxes are not symmetrical, you would have to cut and drill it to make it fit upside down.

^What I was going to say^
