
Hi, im taking the covers and sump off the R1 at the weekend can i use a liquid gasket/shaped paper gasket or should i go for the original part? if so
anywhere i can get them online?

I used some fake sikaflex and its held up on ally - ally faces brilliantly countless times on clutch cover, sump, rocker box - you name it.
Just make sure it is abslutely free from oil and grease and that you dont put so much on so as to leave little 'tails' of the stuff inside

Yup. Make sure it's just a smear otherwise you'll ned up with loads of grot inside the engine....
And don't tell anyone but on the ST1100 I just left the old gasket it place, gave it (and the contact surface) a bit of a wipe with new engine oil and no leaks (yet!!)... I'd bought a clutch gasket but decided not to fit it until I was sure I'd done the clutch replacement okay. I found I'd done the clutch okay and old gasket didn't leak so I've never got round to changing it....
I've reused undamaged gaskets on the clutch cover and rotor cover without problems. The sump gasket is permenantly under oil so any leak will show badly.
my sump gasket split into lots of pieces. a new one is only £6 so not worth trying to use liquid gasket.
Agreed, if they were £20-30 a shot and you needed to replace them every other week, then I can understand seeking an alternative, but for £6 every once in a while its just not worth it. Doing it with the original gasket pretty much guarantees an even consistent sealing surface as long as you clean the mating surfaces, and guarantees you won't get excess gloop in the engine when it squeezes together which is a serious possibility even with the most evenly/sparingly applied liquid gasket.
