R1 breather
bassett - 20/1/08 at 01:52 PM

Hi, ive seen a few R1(02-03) installs where a small breather has been fitted on top of the gearbox. Is this the recommended thing to do or should it be plumped back into the system. If it is where is best to reconnect it to?
Cheers
Adam

It should just run back up to the air box,but if your not using the standard air box, most people just put a small breather filter on it,or run a pipe to a small oil catch/breather tank away from the engine, like Ive done on my zx10.

Interesting as I had noticed the hole (approximately 10-12mm from memory?) on the top of the gearbox and was wondering whether a breather and catch tank could be used.

My question from here is...

... if the hole isn't threaded what do you use to attach a breather pipe to the hole in the casing?

Just used a jubilee/hose clip on mine

Yep just plumb a hose into a breather tank (or beer can if you want a Locost solution), you can push a hose on the outlet and use a jubilee clip as Paul mentioned.

After the feed to it, does the catch tank plumb back into the system or does it just terminate? Are there any advantages/disadvantages between the vent filter and catch tank as the vent is the cheaper solution but would prefer the best solution.
thanks again

They usually terminate at the tank with a breather, the main advantages of fitting a catch tank, rather than having it fed back into the airbox is that all of the blow by gases/oil mist and condensation are forced back into the engine, which will not help performance and can start to clog things up.And if you just put a breather filter direct onto the engine, all the above ends up in time all over your engine, the catch tank helps to condense the moisture, and mist in the bottom of the tank which then can be drained off by removing a small plug in the bottom, and apart from all that they look nice

Thanks for the extra detail and certainly a good point, would look rather nice next to the ally header.
