R1 5VY - trigger wheel removal
lsdweb - 1/2/08 at 08:50 AM

Hi All

Does anybody know if the cam chain and bottom drive gear can be removed without removing the cams?
I need to change the crank trigger wheel and just need to know how much of a job it'll be - I'm assuming that there won't be enough slack by just removing the cam chain tensioner so it'll mean removing the cams :-(

Regards

Wyn

If it’s the same as the 4XV the cam pulleys are held on by two bolts,

You can just remove one pulley to gain enough slack in the chain to get it off.

Thanks Dave

It's slightly different from the 4XV (the crank trigger wheel sits behind the chain) but the principle is the same - I'll give that a try before removing the cams!

Dave

Sorted - as you recommended! It was a bit of a fiddle but I got there in the end. I've just got to check the timing with a dial gauge and I can put it all back together again. The new timing wheel (36/1) doesn't have the markings so I need to get it spot on then mark it.

Glad you got it sorted, Shouldn’t be to hard to set up to true TDC same principle as when I dialled my cams in most of the info’s in the Burton power catalogue.

Did you have the trigger wheel made or is it part of a kit?

Is one available for the 4XV I remember you had problems with it slipping on you old setup

Probably a bit early to think about next years upgrades when I haven’t finished this years yet But getting rid of the carbs is one of the things I’m thinking about

The new wheel is pictured here

I bought the wheel fro an online supplier (www.trigger-wheels.com ) and then had it machined to suit. Not that expensive and hopefully it'll be fit and forget (this time!).

I did fit an internal trigger wheel to the 5JJ but ended up upgrading before running it! Photo here

Let me know if you want more details.
