I take it your budget refers to just the engine?? TBH though I've never looked at 2nd hand Riots.

If you're looking for a decent motor though give Malc at Yorkshire engines a call, he'll get you a decent ZX12 with minimal miles for about £1400.

In terms of which engine though I guess everyone's view will be different. I went for the ZX mainly cos I wanted the extra torque to heave my big fat ass around (16 stone ish).

R1s are popular so there's lots of people know them and can make them work. ZX12 is a bit more rare so fewer people know it.

2004 onwards R1 engines are very high revving with a red line of 13750 RPM. noise levels are measured at 3/4 max power revs so you'll struggle with noise unless you have a big can. The ZX12 will be lower revving overall. It might make cruising a bit more civilised too. I'd have thought the ZX12 would cost more though.

Look for posts by Yorkshire Engines for prices.

Do you have to Dry sump the Zx12? as this bumps up the price of engine installs

Jon Ison - 9/4/08 at 04:04 PM

Absolutely nothing wrong with the R1.

In your position though I would go for the ZX12, that's my next move when this dam fragile blow up all the time blade gives up the ghost, It's only been in the car 6 years and thrashed within an inch of its life every time it turns a wheel, fragile little thing.

As its going across the back in the Riot,( same plane as in bike) will it need dry sumping?
Mike

For your buget I would go for the late model R1,same power as the ZX12 but a lighter weight engine, the Riot is a light car so would be well suited to the R1,just fit a baffle plate and your sorted.

one piece of advice.make sure that whichever engine you buy is complete,as even minor parts can be elusive and expensive!!!!

grub - 9/4/08 at 06:58 PM

no i am sure it will be fine without a dry sump system on it even, better with your installation.

is that a spotlight you have on there paul or a flame thrower

r1_pete - 9/4/08 at 08:03 PM

Go for an R1, make R1's rarer and my bike worth more

imp paul - 9/4/08 at 08:04 PM

zx12r has more low down grunt and is very good for tuneing see MB CUSTOMS MASIVE for all your power mods Rescued attachment image615.jpg

Oh no, you can't post photos like that, SWMBO will kill me if I start mentioning I might want a turbo and therefore need more money in the kitty account
