Will this melt?
TimC - 14/4/08 at 02:59 PM

My exhaust can is held on with a bike-style strap as seen here.

I need some rubber to sit between the can and the strap. This looks just the job, but the question is, will it melt?

TIA

I think it should be OK, you have quite a big/long can so the heat shouldn't be too concentrated. My smaller shorter can gets too hot to hold onto, but not by much.

Edit to say...
Alternative might be to use some exhaust insulation wrap instead of or with the rubber?

I wouldn't do it! WHat is wrong with metal to metal around the silencer if the strap is properly tight it won't move!

I agree - metal to metal should be OK and if there's no rubber there, no rubber will burn .

am I missing the point? why do you need rubber strip? the metal strap will hold it fine and no excess weigh, C. Chapman will be proud.

Nothing wrong with puting some rubber in there, but i wouldnt used that 'tank strap' unless you can just about hold your hand on the surface.
- You might be able to, but if get much over 100 odd C you might start to runn into burnt rubber issues! Silicon rubber is good for about 300C, maybe more if your not relying on any real mechcanical strenght.

Hi All

I've tried the link above but he doesn't have the right size - as close to 20mm wide as possible required. Any other ideas?

Thanks

Get an old inner tube from the tyre fitter and cut your own

They are but not for a 6" dia' can - I can't find such a strap.
