converting bike speedo

I will have my CBR 1000 clocks in about 7 days and need to know if i can convert the speedo to be accurate?

If so how?

Its not an ugly cluster an will be using the rev counter and dont want to waste the speedo if i can avoid it.

any advice appreciated

How 'bout making a new face for the speedo? might be simplest if you can open it up.

Not sure how far out the clocks would be or how many pulses are picked up per revolution on the prop shaft on the CBR. On the ZX9 bike there are 4 pulses (4 lugs picked up by a sensor) per revolution, with the car installation i was told (on here) that if you reduce this to 3 the speedo is a lot closer. Its what we have done, but we are not on the road yet so it may be a mile out. I supppose a bit of maths would easily work it out.

Not sure how it works on the CBR1000, on my 99 blade it works off a sensor in the gearbox so its not adjustable in that way, but earlier blades didnt have this sensor so I'd assume it was done off the wheel or sprocket etc. If so then yeh its possible you may be able to set up a different arrangement of sensor / magnets to give a fairly accurate reading.

Checked the cbr manual last night, and im screwed because it has a cable driven speedo off the rear hub

any ideas now?

bin the cbr clocks?? I hope you got the clocks cheap

Find out id the tacho can be used from a kwak bike so you can use the speedo.

or

Position the tacho in you dash with the rest of the pod hidden behind the dash and get another speedo.

clocks were cheap, £20. it also has a temp guage in the cluster, i will have to see if i can get them apart and seperated and bin the speedo

Is the wiring of the kwak speedo simple and does it need any type of feed from the CDI? if so compatability will be an issue.

also if it just counts pulses from magnets on the propshaft how does it know you dont have a tractor like wheel and tyre combo going on? and what diff you are running? are they in any way adjustable or is that what you wiould use the yellow box for?

There is no chance of getting the zx9 clocks apart as they are on a printed circuit board, i assume the cbr's are the same. As long as the speedo isn't in the centre of the temp and tacho you could offsett it to the side.

zx9 speedo is only accurate if you use the exactly the same gearing as the bike taking into consideration the sproket size and wheel size, that is why it is apparently 40% out, but if you reduce the number of lugs (i.e. reduce the number of counts per revolution) being picked up by the sensor then you have basically altered the assumed rpm of the prop and hence bring down the indicated speed. Alternatively or aswell you can use the yellow box solution (which we will do if our reading is to far out).

We are running a 3.62 diff

are you sure its taken off the rear wheel m8,,what year is the bike,there normaly driven off the front wheel ,but either one its gonna be hard for you to rig it up,,could you use a pushbike speedo? i saw a digital wireless one the other day ,but i suppose its if the signal would reach all the way to your dash

i just assumed it is off the rear wheel its an '88 bike.

I could do the sticky number thing but the milage would be all to cock then! may have to invest in a set of other clocks or get an electronic speedo from somewhere.
