I used a bicycle gear cable. I tried a brake cable but it was too stiff. Gear cable is thinner and more flexible. Used a barrel solderless nipple on the engine end.

The best cables I've found are made by venhill. They do a universal kit and come with various size nipples.

As long as you fit it properly and have a throttle stop behind the pedal (properly adjusted) you will have no problems.

I found the best way to fit the nipple was clean the cable end and nipple with contact leaner.

Use soldering flux on the cable and nipple, feed the cable through the nipple (bigger gap to the outside) and cut it with 2-3 mm showing.

Use a thin screw driver or similar to spaly the end of the wire.

Hold the cable upright with the splay at the top and using a gas flame heat the end gently until the flux starts bubbling and feed solder into the end, can be a little fiddly to get it to run in but shouldn't take long. Don't overheat the wire as you can make it brittle if you get it cherry hot. You should see the solder start running out the bottom, when you see this stop. File the end so you don't have a sharp edge and that's it all done.
