hi all ive got the r1 5vy engine but need some clocks for it ive been looking out on ebay and other places and the only ones that come up are either stupid money or in kph so i was thinking will any r1 clock fit or ive seen them vapor ones in rally design they seem cheap enough and look like quite a good bit of kit but are they easy to use with the existing engine and am i going to get any problems not using the standard clocks any help thankful cheers adam
There are advantages and disadvantages to both.
Original clocks are easy to fit and in the case of later R1 the engine diagnostics can be run through them (right down to test firing individual coils
and injectors). They are expensive though as they are usually damaged when the bikes are writen off.
Aftermarket clocks are easier to obtain and some have data logging, you don't have to bother getting rid of the EXUP fault light, etc.
I went for the bike clocks.

I thought the 5vy clocks had a digital odo / speedo and this could be switched between km and miles via the mode buttons??? If so then the standard clocks might be pretty cost effective as you dont need so many additional warning lights etc and the fuel warning light can be used with a suitable sensor (£12 or so). You also get a shift light and the diagnostics which can be very valuable
i thought i had heard that but when ever ive asked them they all say kph only but suppose not everyone would know you can switch them but dont want to buy them to find out you cant then be stuck with them also are all the o4 o5 and o6 clocks them same

Pre 2000 models you flip between MPH & KPH by pressing both buttons simoultaneously. My 2001 is MPH only it does not switch, as I understand nor do the later ones, it was a move to make the parallel import trade more expensive....... less lucrative might be a better description.
That goes against what the Yamaha 5VY 2004 user manual says then!! Can someone check the following??
"To switch the speedometer and odometer/tripmeter displays between kilometers and miles, press the "SELECT" button for at least one
second"
There was an internal mod on the old clocks used by grey importers bridging two terminals together on the PCB, 12 and 13 I think. You could run them with a yellow box to correct the speedo reading.
i can switch between MPH and KPH on my 5vy clocks, AFAIK its only uk clocks that can do that

Mine (5VY) switch from MPH to KPH but I've been told its only UK clocks that do. Seems odd if thats true; why make 2 variants if you don't
have to?
