R1 Can - any good for DB?
Kriss - 28/8/08 at 12:57 PM

Hi guys, after some advice

I am going to Brands in October for a 105 DB day.

Current engine state of tune is:
R1 5PW '03 fuel injected with standard airbox
4-1 manifold
Micron carbon exhuast (very loud!)

I know I should be fine on a 105db day, but would like to reduce my DB so I know I can make quieter days.

Would a standard exhuast can from an R1 be a good can to get the DB down further? (Lots of old bike ones on ebay)

Any other advise would be good too. I dont want to spend loads of money on a posh looking system just for track work.

I tried a standard 4VX Carbon can, but it wasn't any quieter that my std MNR can.
On my meter it was 104db @ 7500rpm.

bloddy hell , thats loud!

with airbox?

If you fancy trying an R1 can I have 2 sat in the garage. Was going to try putting them both in with a Y after the 4-1 but havent got round to it. They have a much larger diameter pipe so I'm loath to cut them and try them until someone advises me yeah or neah - I did have a thread but it died out with no finished answers...

I'm going to nick a soundmeter from work next week - if your only in winchester i can let you get a reading if we meet up - (just down the 272 at clanfield). Will give you a base reading to work from.

It certainly is.

With a home made airbox.

I don't believe anyone who claims to get 98db or below with a std can.
You need a Long Big Diameter can to get the noise down.

The R1 can will be significantly quieter than the Micron can. When I had an MK Indy R1 I used the R1 can and was tested at or around 101db (varies from circuit to circuit). You will be lucky to get under 105dB with the Micron can.

I managed to drop this below 100dB with a large custom made can.

thanks very much for the offer but i am in surrey - near croydon!

My mates have the standard westfiel bike can with a Busa engine on a sausage filter.

their engine makes the scariest sound ever but still hit 101, must be able to dropt hat down further with an airbox if ever needed. their car does sound like its shredding paper from behind, weird i know!

so then, where to get a giant can from????

I passed the noise test at donnington show a few years ago 4xv R1 with standard carbon can and airbox!

If I remember right that was a 98db limit, did two 20 min sessions without a problem.

An R1 can would be way quieter than a micron can.

The only good thing his BECship did to my car was fit a largish can from (I think) a Megabusa. It's pretty quiet but I'm still avoiding 98db days. There was a decent thread on here a while back about exhausts so worth a search.

great name jubal lol!

done loads of searches but no conclusive answers.

do you think i should go for an R1 can and see how I get on?

Jubal - 28/8/08 at 03:54 PM

Hehe. I ran an R1 can on the blade engine for a while. It lasted a few trackdays and got me down to about 102db with the standard airbox. It will be better than the Micron for sure.

BTW I have other names for him too...

I am an idiot - had you confuzzed with someone else - oops - sorry.

Teach me to read the left side of the page...

However I still have the cans!

Kriss - 28/8/08 at 04:08 PM

are you looking to get rid of one quickly?

hobzy - 28/8/08 at 05:47 PM

If someone knowledgeable can definitely say that 2 in parallel wont work then yes They are the titanium 5JJ ones.
