As above i have a 3.62 sierra diff and just wanted to know if it was ok to use with an R1 or not? Any extra info welcome
Cheers
Dave
Im running the same diff with my zx9
I have a 3.62 LSD with my 98 R1. It is fine for road use. Top Speed in 1st is 52 MPH, top speed in top is 120.
Peak power is at 103 MPH in top gear so above 105 MPH on the track, acceleration suffers. All those things you passed on the twisty bits catches you
up again.
A 3.38 or 3.14 might be better but are rare and expensive.
I have 3.62 diff and an 03 R1. Works a treat. I wouldn't want it geared any higher for track work. By my calcs, on 195/50/15 tyres it makes max power at 108 mph in top.
It also depends on what year R1 you have?
i had a 3.14 in my 05 R1( think they have a longer 1st or primery) and it was way to tall, i couldn't pull away with any revs.
but it would do 82mph in 1st!
82! In 1st!
i have an early 07 R1? does that make any difference?
OK, so my engine's the Yamaha Fazer but they're very similar. Here's my tuppence worth...
I've been both sides of the 3.62 (in 18 months have had fitted a 3.38 and a 3.92) and in my opinion the 3.62 is the best all-rounder for the
gearing.
The 3.92 had the revs squealing and topping out far too early (with a top speed of 107mph). Agreed... I blimin' well overtook everything in the
bends.., once had a Porsche 911, Lotus Elise and Lambourghini Countach all in one swift move!... but alas was soon overtaken again on the straight -
he he - what a day!
The 3.38 brought the "absolutely phenomenal" acceleration back down to "realistically normal". I also felt it didn't help my
poor little clutch, especially when pulling away (although your R1 has a better clutch than my Fazer).
The choice is yours, stick with what you feel is right - are you lacking top end speed or accelaration?
I guess one good thing is how easy diffs are (i) to change and (ii) to find for sale.
I have 3.38:1 on an '05 R1 and it is perfect. I can pull away at normal revs, it will do approx 70mph in first and top speed of 135mph. 70mph in
6th gear is 7k rpm. It will accelerate in top gear from about 40mph with no hesitation. I wouldn't go any lower it will be too revvy.

it's what I'm going to be running in mine when I build it - '08 R1. Well, atleast until I stick a supercharger on it, then I'll
need a 3.38
Slightly OT, but I cant find the tab anywhere on my Diff. If its doing 80mph at 8000 in 6th, any ideas? Seems to top out at about 112 and thats past the scary white rev limit light! Its an 03 R1.

Well if it's topping out at 112mph i'd say you have a jap import![]()
i would say either a 3.62 or 3.92 only real way to check is take the backplate off.
Now thats useful - nice one.
