A friend of mine just sent me this link. The video is incredible. It's one of the best racing clips I have seen in a while. At the end there is an extra segment where an AE86 takes on an R34 GT-R V-Spec II in a road race and whoops butt.

It's a shame that the camera car was holding the other cars back though, especially as he was able to make a good lead in a very short time!

I was suprised at the Boxster, but it looked like the older less powerful model.
I'll have to go look again now!

WOW! Great! Thanks! what the hell is an AE86??? he must have been on and off the gas pedal 100 times on that one curve. Even better than the other shoot (very good) out.

AE86 is basically a high performance corrolla, not sure if you have them in the UK, but here in the US they are as good as pooh. It is an excellentl handling car that is slightly underpowered.

The AE86 is a front engine rear wheel drive late 80's Corolla with a 4AGE engine. Yes, watch that clip again, that's your late 80's rear wheel drive 4AGE powered lightweight car whooping an all wheel drive twin turbo modern ultra sports car. Uhuuuuh!!!

It's the most common car for Drifting. That and the 240SX

The trueno AE86 (it's actual name) is exactly what he said a corrolla on steroids, Very popular for drifting, and popular in downhill racing (a popular japanese street racing scene, especially in the more mountainous areas of that country). It is one of those cars that is often underestimated.

Dont understimate japanese engineering. Some of the cars they build over4 there are suprisingly amazing. The japanese car companies have an unwritten rule of 279 hp max, but if you dyno most of their supercars they exceed that number by leaps and bounds. Cars like the Skyline, NSX, supra, rx7, fairlady Z (350Z), silvia (240sx)all have max hp ratings of 279, but if you dyno them the skyline has over 400, NSX, supra, fairlady, and rx7 are in the 350 range, and the silvia has just around 300 (all the top of the line models of course).

There are a host of other cars that are among the japanese supercar list that I cantthink of off the top of my head right now, but they are doing amazing things with inline 4, 6 and v6 engines, most of them have some kind of forced induction, and that almost all have equally impressive handling qualities.

The problem why you dont really hear about alot of their cars is that the keep them in the JDM (japanese domestic market), a feww spill outside their country, but usually have to be modified to meet either european or US crash or emmissions standards, all of which year after year are harder to meet.

As far as the HP ratings go I believe that each japanese JDM company is allowed to sell a small number of non-emissions compliant cars which attain these high HP figures.
