What's yours?

Mine has to be either a bike engine on full chat, Subaru flat 4 with standard unequal headers or an angle grinder early in the morning

The sound of the wife's car door in 20 minutes time cause that'll mean she can get the tea on

Quattro S1 full chat on the 1000 lakes - 1986 ?
Cosworth GAA V6 3.4
David 'tut' Duncan's Elise S1 with the Civic type R engine. When it hit's the Vtec bit of the powerband, it sounds like nothing on earth.

Aston DB5 in race tune.

There's more.

I took the air filter off my dads Impreza once, the sound of the turbo spooling up was amazing!!

Liam - 11/6/05 at 04:44 PM

Alfa 164 V6 (or probably any alfa v6) - you can forgive all the crap build and dodgy electrics!

My buddy Geoff's Scorp Cos V6 after we replaced the intake resonator box with a length of stainless pipe. Amazing!!

Metro 6R4. EVERYONE needs to go to a rallycross event to experience it.

Hmmm bit of a V6 fetish I think. Ok...

Turbos and associated paraphenalia. Especially WRC style chattery/squeaky dump valve noise (as opposed to normal whoosh noise). I really need to find out what causes that (type of dump valve? No dump valve?) and get one for my installation.

And finally, 50's BRM supercharged V16. OH MY GOD!!! Only heard it on MP3 unfortunately =(

piston and diaphram dump valves sound different, piston is a fast whoosh, and diaphrams are more flappy/spluttery

my best sounds of recent years...
i had to drop off a SL55 at heathrow airport ready for shipment to the states
nice burble of the 5.5 V8 whilst around town...
followed by the scream of the twin superchargers when you floor it and
then the sound of profanity when you realise how fast your going
but very

Don't you mean V16?

Personally I love the sound of my V8 Stag. With its unequal length tailpipes you won't find a better V8 'burble'.

Yes, Sit in it at idle at the lights and you are Steve McQueen just about to floor it at the lights in 'Bullit'

umm. might do, as far as i know (or remember) wastegates are different to dumpvalves. Dump valves prevent backspinning of the turbo by keeping inlet pressure below exhaust pressure, i believe that a wastegate relates to bleeding excess inlet manifold pressure regardless of the pressure in the exhaust - this is what limits the car to say 11psi or whatever

might be complete bollox though

[Edited on 11/6/05 by JoelP]

shades - 11/6/05 at 10:41 PM

Thought the dump valve was to get rid of the pressure quickly when the throttle is lifted off. i.e. dump the pressure. also gives the the pishhh sound when changing gear and the valve opens an vents the pressure to the exaust?

phelpsa - 11/6/05 at 10:43 PM

Mr G, there was a Sierra XR4 there before and now there's a trabby, which is it???

Adam

shades - 11/6/05 at 10:45 PM

The trabby... it was mostly gearbox whine?

That's right, now I can't remember whether they have both or not.

Oh and on that sound recording I'm nearly positive the whining noise is a straight cut gearbox, and the engine sounds like a v12 to my ears.

ANY V twin Ducati at speed

Stuart Ainslie - 12/6/05 at 10:06 AM

Paxman Vallenta - Powerplant for HST's (train).
Full power with the turbo screaming sounds nice but a bit load...

Also the engine fitted to the Deltic's (another train) - cylinders in a delta configuration gives a very pleasing engine note.

Not a train spotter - Just worked in the indusrty for 18 years....

The youngest of my sisters (b*tch) was responsible for the development of the engine management system of the 6R4 (and the Aston-Martin Le Mans team AND the Jaguar Le Mans team) and did she invite me to ANY of the test days/sesions...............

Your answers on a post card please.

my kawasaki kh250 two stroke triple sounded pretty good last month after spending 6 months on a complete restoration and engine rebuild.

the enjoyment was slightly marred by the fact i almost lost the use of my legs kicking the fecking thing over trying to get it to start!

gys - 13/6/05 at 06:06 AM

Such a sound? (18 MB vid)

VW Golf IV Kit Car, Peugeot 106 Maxi and Peugeot 306 Maxi are also nice...

andyps - 13/6/05 at 10:16 AM

V8 TVR's.

Also, teh best sounding car during the grand prix yesterday - the Merc safety car! What a noise. Actually similar to the COrvettes I should be listening to at LeMans later this week.

NS Dev - 13/6/05 at 11:10 AM

..............or better still, a pair of ducati 916 engines with very limited silencing in the back of an autograss special, as used to be around in the uk a couple of years ago (where is it now!?)........................alternatively, "baby growler" the twin v-twin powered class 10 grasser that I saw racing last weekend!......................then again the 700hp Ultima that I will be off to Le Mans in on Thursday sounds pretty nice!!..............................come to that nothing howls quite like the ex DTM racing Opel-Cosworth 2.5 V6 that used to be in Andy Burton's rally car, that was a treat hearing it coming through the forest.......................

Possibly best noises on one event ever was watching the Wexford rally in Ireland 5 years or so ago.............NO silencing required.........................the sound of metro 6r4s chasing UNSILENCED, anti-lag equipped WRC's was amazing. An RAC official stood next to us by the side of the road at one point and recorded 125db next to my ear!!!!

which leads me to the best of the lot.............................Top Fuel Dragster at Santa Pod!!!!!!!!!!!!..............nothing can ever sound better than an 8 litre supercharged nitro burning v8 at 8000revs.

think i might have seen one of those as a cutaway in the coventry car musem...... the pistons operate at opposite ends of the bore and compress in the centre. looks really weird!

Rorty - 14/6/05 at 05:33 AM

Top of the pile for sheer chest pounding, ground shaking ability; a Top Fuel nitro burning supercharged V8.
Much less powerful, but equally entertaining would have to be the very distinct thrumming of a cross-over V8 (as in the rear of one of my Beetles).
The ultimate engine sound I will never tire of would have to be any four cylinder sports bike engine in an off-road buggy at full trot (with minimal non-standard silencer), which sounds like a cross between a BDA and a stuttering motocrosser as it pitter-patters flat-out over uneven ground. Aural sex!
