Rather than trying to buy an immobiliser, it would be simple to just disconect the battery when parked. It will upset the car jackers no end.

I tried something similar on a mkII escort years back, I took out the coil lead and took it in doors,, They lifted the car on to a low back in stead of driving it away

I'd just unplug the LT loom that goes to the coils. That or fit a hidden battery switch.

I used to take out the fuel pump relay in our old Cavalier but that wouldn't stop anyone determined enough, as already said they would just lift onto a flatbed truck. Bastards.

Our Locost was saved less than a week ago by the immobiliser.
Parked in Lee's back yard, he got up, found it half uncovered with the ignition smashed and a flat battery.

Looks like they just kept trying to start it (no spark until immobiliser is switched off) even with a flashing red LED in their faces.

Still, we had a spare switch and no damage was done elsewhere.

It'd not stop a thief who "really" wants it, but it stopped a couple of chavs tearing it around a field before torching it.....

As said - if they really want it... they'll have it. Best immobiliser is the gearbox/gearchange on a BEC. As a chav's IQ is less than the ameoba's number of cells - it'll stump him - hopefully!

Wow! car jacking is that big of an issue for you?

one idea I have had (which could backfire badly on the car's owner though!) is to simply have a hidden switch that activates an isolator connecting the coil feed to a pyrotechnic incendiary device in the driver's seat.

The cars starts fine with the switch in on or off positions, but the driver's seat catches fire shortly afterwards if it isn't switched off!!!!

As I say, sure I would regret that idea but might give the thieving scum something to think about.......no car and no skin on bum!

I thought about something similar when parking in west end of glasgow (where traffic wardens are the threat!) somehow run a live feed from battery to wipers so they are unable to leave you any supprises on ur windscreen

as you would need to ask them to kindly earth themselves i doubt it would work!

as for disconnecting ht leads surely they could just nick one of the other plug leads and used it instead? on 3 cylinders?!

these scum dont give a poo about anyone or anything they robbed my families car in the middle of the night without making a noise our street was a quiet cul de sac aswell.. he must have st on his back for 20minutes disabling the immobiliser..

the best lock you can buy is a visible decent one etc

if your leaving the car for abit,ie over winter,why not just take a wheel or 2 off.

Just build like the car manufactures do...

an device with an microprocessor wich needs to see an good key before it ever injects or sparks etc...

in my case it would mean they maybe could start the engine, but no way to engage gear, also accelerator wouldn't work.

The problem with an commercial immobilizer is that they can study them...

in fact they could easy undo the installation......

and with an production car they cant, there is only one way and thats sending the right signal down to the MCU...

but because that singal changes every time you start its not the fastest option...

but if they wanted, they just do like the cops when faulty parked!

p.s. i even think that when you injury some one when stealing your car you are violating laws..

its like the thief in your house..you first have to tell him to leave etc.

A removable steering wheel might confuse them for a bit - you cant even push it down the road to hot-wire it.

Mind you, the serious theif will have prepared for all the above - you can only make it obvious that your pride and joy is valued by putting a visual deterrent like a steering/gear lever lock ....... or a bloody great Rotty on the driver's seat
