4age questions

Hope you can help me....
I am working on a seven with a 4age silvertop and a T50 gearbox.
What bolts are used to mount the gearbox to the engine? M12 x 1 mm?
The starter is mounted on the right side of the engine but there is no place in the bellhousing.
In the T50 bellhouding is place on the left side, can I mount it there?

Hi,

I think the bolts are M12x1's - can't be sure but that's the only metric fine thread that is around the same size.
You can mount the starter on the exhaust side, you'll just need a RWD starter and modify the steel sandwich plate that goes between the two. Easy enough to do.

Tim

The most likely thread pitch for a Japanese M12 bolt is 1.25mm

As far as I know, they all run with the starter on the exhaust side. The 16 valve was available as rear wheel drive mated to a T50. It's likely that the sandwich plate from one of those will bolt straight in.

Quite a few down here also run with the Ford type 9 box - it's cheaper and apparently a little stronger. Alternative ratios are also certainly cheaper !!

Hi,the starter bolts onto the exhaust side as said, and the T50 boxes have better ratios standard and are much lighter.
Type 9's are ok if you can afford the close ratio gears but they dont come cheap.

I made up a new sandwich plate by welding on the bottom half of a FWD plate to the RWD plate with some minor changes. That way I could move the starter to the exhaust side and keep the Aluminium infill (don't know its correct name) piece between the engine and the gearbox.

Hi

If you have the Silvertop starter, you can ali weld the starter and drill a new hole on the longer mounting lug and the starter will fit at the exhaust side. You will need to cut the lug shorter a bit.

See this link: http://www.locost.co.za/BuildDiaries/Andreduplessis/Jul2005.htm

Check out the pics for 15 July, it shows the mods I had to do on the starter.
